I worked out for 45 minutes today since I knew I was going to be gorging myself on mexican food. All psyched and stomach hungry, I drove 20 minutes to South San Francisco for Taqueria La Morena. Quite easy to find, exit grand and make a left on Linden and right on Baden. There's metered parking on the streets and paid parking across the street. It's the 2 story building next to the Shell gas station.

I initially made the visit since I heard the carne asade burrito was the thing to get. The prices are very cheap with a regular burrito starting at $3.50 to the deluxe super burrito for $4.60. It's kinda a drag they charge 75 cents for a small ziplock of chips. After double-scanning the menu, I changed my mine at the last second and went with the carne asada plate. I took up residence on the 2nd floor and admired the large mexican murals and empty plates on a number of the barren tables.

The plate didn't take too long and I started to go to work. Taqueria gives you a mile high of tortillas. I counted 8 steamy piles of corn discs! the plate was one of those long oval plates and piled with rice, beans, sour cream, guac, lettuce, salsa fresca, and carne asada. It's quite a bit of food for $6.25 and it's much better than order 3 x $2 tacos. I can make 5 good size tacos and I have rice and beans.

tortillas - 8 frickin corn tortillas, wow.

rice - very good

refried beans - runny and melt in your mouth

guacamole - just ok with a complaint about the temperature of the guac. It wasn't cold at all and the color was almost a brown green which leads me to believe it had been sitting for awhile.

carne asada - the pictures don't lie. If you look closely to #6, you'll notice there is no glistening on the meat, no steam, nothing. No shininess will most likely mean TOTAL BLANDNESS up ahead. And not surprising, it was one of the most dull carne asada's recorded to date. It's like they forgot to heat up the meat sitting in the steel container and went straight to my plate. I want to believe they forgot to season it too. Quite terrible and only finished with 2 tacos and left the rest for the trash.

With all the requests I received for Taqueria La Morena, I want to believe it was a way off day. The food is nowhere like the descriptions I was given and sad to see it had to end the way it did. I am quite the lenient grader but cannot give a pass on this carne asada. The rice, beans, and tortillas were really good but the meat was lacking any ummmph. The only thing to help the meat was loading up on the guac and hot sauce.

Just to give you an idea what I look for in carne asada, cooked to order and over a flame grill. I don't discriminate against a flat grill as long as it's seasoned and marinated enough. After cooking the piece of steak medium, they'll cut it in front of you. And for people who complain about getting fat in the meat, get over it. Do you really expect to get prime quality meat for $3? For finishing touches, a wedge of lime. I know I'm rambling a bit but none of these carne asada preferences were found at Taquera La Morena. If your's differ from my expectations, you might disagree with my rating.
