Sometime last year, Jimmy's Rib Shack sold his bbq joint to another owner (Terry?). I remember passing by and the restaurant was painted in loud orange flames. I never got a chance to review that place and now it's under new ownership. The orange flames appear to be gone and menu still offers bbq items. The ladies behind the counter are some of the nicest people you'll meet. If I recall correctly, the prices are about the same when it used to be Jimmy's and portion sizes are huge.

I went with the 2 meat dinner ordering the twice cooked potato, collard greens, corn bread, brisket, and beef ribs. The dinner plate rang in at $16 with tax. Restaurant decor appears to resemble an Asian island atmosphere with little bbq smoke in the air.

twice cooked potato (picture 6) - it's a potato cut in half with the top portion of the potato being a cheese, sour cream mashed potatoes. I think the side item would have tasted great but the bottom half wasn't cooked all the way though. I would consider trying this again.

collard greens (picture 9, small cup) - tasted like a filipino soup called sabow. Had slices of ham, collard greens, cabbage?, and don't be surprised if you see a floating oil slick. Tasted good but watch out on the fat content. Much different than other bbq houses and their bitter collard greens.

corn bread (picture 9) - I'm most confused about this side item. The top tasted like a gritty corn flavored sugar cookie. It was crunchy? For a sweet snack, I would like it, otherwise, corn bread should be soft and moist. Maybe I'm a moron and suppose to dip this in the collard greens.

brisket (picture 7) - meat was tender and had a bunch of fat on it, I felt guilty eating it. It was good enough to eat without the bbq sauce. I don't recall seeing a red pink ring and meat didn't have a smokey flavor. Kinda weird they cut the brisket with the grain. I think this meat would taste better in a bbq sandwich.

beef ribs (picture 8) - giant ribs, portions of the ribs were overcooked, lot of meat on the ribs, probably coated with bbq sauce and slow cooked, much better than the brisket. Parts of it tasted like prime rib. I ordered it with the spicy sauce and complemented the ribs nicely. Wasn't too hot and had a sweet red pepper flavoring. It's worth trying again.

Well, I thought the Rib Shack was good and service friendly. I'm not sure how long they have been open but I think a couple of kinks need to be worked out.

- twice cooked potato needs to be cooked all the way through and served warm enough to where the cheese is melted.

- brisket should be cut across the grain, makes better for presentation and easier to cut.

Rib Shack makes a decent addition to the bay area bbq community. Their meat are from Niman Ranch and prices are inline with other bbq restaurants. Dinner plates will probably cost you under $20 with drink and under $10 for sandwiches. Parking is available in front of the restaurant and on the street. Open 7 days a week.

Short Rib Special

Rib was good. Greens were quite good. Mashed potatoes coul dhave been warmer. Price was a little on the high side for lunch, but they did have more reasonable priced items on lunch menu. Owner was there and all of the staff were very friendly.
