Quite often jatbar will receive word on a mind blowing meal and we're sent in to investigate. Our target, Bullshead restaurant located in West Portal district of San Francisco. Known for their steaks and hamburgers, I was sent to eat a cheeseburger. I love burgers almost more than burritos and take these kind of comparisons seriously :p

Next to the MUNI station, this old looking restaurant appears to have seen better days. The dark and dreary atmosphere lacks modern conveniences like bright lights and new carpet. It's obvious people don't come here for the decor but the more importantly, the food.

Bullshead has an impressive selection of burgers. They have chuck steak hand formed patties, turkey, buffalo, garden, fish, chicken, and even more toppings to customize your meal. I ordered a 1/2lb burger with american cheese. Burgers are cooked over an open flame and served with fresh cut fries.

The service was a bit slow but I didn't seem to mind too much. It's Sunday and I'm in no hurry. Unfortunately, there was an old-timer sitting at the next table complaining about his non-existant BLT that he ordered 15 minutes ago. It was busy and with only 1 cook at the grill, I can understand why it took a bit of time.

My burger arrived on a steel skillet that resembled something from the fajita platter at Chewys.

french fries - on the soggy side and tasted like fries you get at In-N-Out. It would have tasted much better if they were well done. Good news is the potatoes tasted fresh and not like the frozen stuff.

buns - i was worried at first as it looked like there was too much bread. Luckily the bread is airy and fluffy. topped with sesame seeds and barely toasted. I'd rate it a 8.5

toppings - red onions, tomatoes, american cheese, and green leaf lettuce. All items tasted fresh. I used a small amount of mayo. I was a little disappointed with the cheese, should have been melted over the grill.

meat - chuck steak, crumbly, medium cooked, smelled like steak, tasted like steak, little char tasting. 1/2 lb patty and good amount of beef in every bite. Meat was lean and lacked the grease you would see at other low-grade burger places. I think more seasoning and charred flavoring would have helped bump this patty to my favorite burger's list for San Francisco.

The burger was a good sized burger and with a coke and tip, I spent about $14. Service was on the slow side and atmosphere was no thrills type of place. There burgers are the real deal and wouldn't questioning making a return visit. I've heard good things about the Buffalo burgers so give those a try too. Bullshead restaurant impressed me with their juicy burgers but falls a tad short of a 9.
