My latest Calzones experience was somewhat of a disappointment. What the hell happened? I've been taking out of town friends here for the last 3 years and have had good success. From past dining experiences, it was enjoyable to sit on the outdoor patio and people watch. Unfortunately, yesterdays lunch had 6 adults and 2 babies squeezed into 2 small tables. There was barely enough room on our table for our dishes.

I could write paragraphs on my numerous complaints but will provide it in an outline format.

- water was horrible...had to ask 3 times for lemons just to make the water drinkable

- potstickers and lasagne were marginally burned. Must have been sitting in the oven a bit too long?

- lasagne was greasy and lacking the full flavor that I'm accustomed to

- pizza could have used more basil on the Margherita

- Dungeoness crab salad was drenched in Caeser dressing

- asked for bill but never arrived, had to go inside

So with all these complaints, why did I give it a high 7?

- Lasagne has wafer thin layers of pasta. Im guessing 16 layers? When prepared the right way, its awesome.

- Pizza was tasty and would make an excellent appetizer

- Potstickers can be incredible and garnish is equally palatable.

- One of the best outdoor seating restaurants along Columbus.

So before I writeoff Calzones, I will go back again and try their signature dish...the Angel Hair with Seafood and Italian Potstickers. Although it was a holiday weekend and they were extrememly busy, its no excuse when you're spending your hard earned money.

I used to love this place. My favorite was the chicken liver marsala. It is no longer on the menu. The calzones are still to die for. My friend and I split a calzone and a pasta. Needless to say we were very happy. The booths are little tight for 4 but great for 2. Best place to people watch out the large windows onto North Beach. Service and cleanliness were excellent. As my complaint for all of North Beach, parking was very very difficult. This place is a San Francisco favorite of mine for lunch.
