Darla's has an absolutely amazing burger! Who the heck posts 'Possibly the best burger around!' on their restaurant sign? Its a bold statement considering the bay area has tons of outstanding burger spots. I think I have a good sampling of burgers in the bay area, LA, and San Diego. I know what I like and they better fill my hunger pains.
An empty restaurant is a warning sign in my book. I must have miss the lunch rush as there was only 2 other people in the restaurant. I initally sat inside but discovered the outdoor patio. I had the entire patio to myself. I read through 'The Onion' and waited for my double cheeseburger, fries, and coke.
Within a short wait, the waiter delivered what appeared to be sub-style burger, 2 large patties (1/3 lb each) on a french roll with an large amount of shoestring fries. Hmmmm..grill marks...I cut the flame grilled burger in half and caught a scent of steak smell. OH man this is too good to be true.
bread - superb, french roll that was lightly toasted, light and airy, yet maintain an outer crunch. This is what all buns should taste like, I cant think of better bun right now. Outstanding....the only thing is, you have to eat it somewhat fast because the meat is super juicy.
beef - Top 3 for me in the bay area easily. meat was crumbly, smelled like steak, light seasoning, beef is top notch and competes against my other burger favorites like Vals Burger, Joes Cable Car, and Burger Joint. Patties are rectangular and thicker than normal. I ordered my burger cooked medium and it was mouth watering juicy. Not too fatty, but filled with so much flavor. Its one of the best beef patties I have ever had. Gaaawwdd dammmm....its that GOOD!!!
toppings - 2 thick slabs of american cheese, 1 leaf of romaine, thin sliced red onions, light mayo, ketchup, and mustard. Nothing too overwhelming where it affected the taste of the beef. Toppings were a compliment to the patties. If I had a wish, I think Darlas serve the burgers with a thick beef tomato.
fries - shoestring fries, crispy, big portion, too good to be true. Guessing they season the fries with lawrys. Excellent.
Everything about Darlas was outstanding. The burger was flawless, service was excellent, and for $10.50, I think it was worth every penny and hey, they even threw in a small brownie square for mini dessert. Darlas could do no wrong at this point. Call up Darlas and ask about Tues Family special. I think the deal is, after 5PM, kids eat for free with the purchase of 1 adult meal.
There you have it, Darlas is my current FAVORITE burger place in the bay area.

RETURN VISIT for Jason! 9/23/2006 - 9.5 Rating: I've been here enough times to say without a doubt, their burgers are consistently one of the best burgers in the bay area. I have about 40 plus documented burger places in the bay area and anytime I have to recommend a burger place to friends and family, Darla's comes in for my top 3 list. I haven't had a mediocre visit yet.
A couple of months ago, I took my cousins and brother there for burgers while I veered off the norm and ordered their fried chicken. Holy moly, their fried chicken kicks ass too! I love fried chicken and if you live in LA, I can tell you the locations of Pioneer Chicken, Dinah's, Roscoe's, Popeyes, etc. Darla's fried chicken is a 9+ !!!
So here's the dilemma, I can only eat so much in 1 visit and still trying to figure out how to eat both the double cheeseburger and fried chicken. Maybe I can ask the famous Kobayashi for training advice? |

After reading Jason's glowing report of Darla's I had to give it a shot since I've been looking for a favorite burger joint for years since Jeffery's changed owners and quality.
So I grabbed 3 friends and headed up to the City. Got there about 2pm, place was easy to find and parking was available right across the street. Looked at the menu with high hopes and wasn't disappointed. Lots of very appealing burger combinations! I flipped flopped between the House Cheeseburger and the Mushroom Swiss. House Cheeseburger comes with 1/3 lb patty, grilled onions, mozzarella cheese and bacon. I went for the Mushroom and swiss but substituted with cheddar instead. After a brief wait the food came and I was happy to see that the fries were shoestrings, my favorite, and hot and crispy. I ordered my burger medium well and it was cooked to perfection. Cheese was well melted and the mushrooms were piled high. The only thing I would like to see added would be a couple of slices of tomatoes to go along with the supplied slices of onion, pickle slices and lettuce. Other than that my burger was PERFECT!
Since I ordered the Mushroom and Swiss my buddy ordered the House Cheeseburger so we could rate 2 burgers at the same time. The other 2 people eating with us ordered a salmon burger and a turkey burger so those don't count. Anyway, his only complaint was that it could've used more mozzarella, even though it was melting and dripping over the sides, because he said he could hardly taste the cheese. I think that since mozzarella doesn't really have a strong cheese taste that the rest of the delicious burger kind of overpowered it. Other than that he said his burger was also perfect. I will be trying it the next time we go there, although I think the Mushroom Cheddar will be my burger of choice for future visits.
Prices were right on par for a burger of this quality and the free brownie square was a nice touch.
My ONLY complaint was the sun was blasting in through the slats in the awning and was a little distracting while eating. This could have been remedied by moving one table over to the left or right.
All in all a perfect meal AND we were served by the very friendly Darla herself! I will return any time I'm in the City.
One last thing, I also had a cup of the delicious clam chowder.
