We were in the City for a visit to the exploratorium and afterwards decided to swing over to the Wharf for dinner. It was a short walk when we spied Fishermen's Grotto. This place has been there forever and the location can't be beat. We walk in, though, and I felt the place was pretty cheezy. The lower level reminded me of those old Farrell's ice cream parlors. Beat down.

We sit down though and are delighted with prompt friendly service. The menu is filled with dishes that sound quite exciting. Prices are high, as can be expected for the location. Fresh sourdough bread is brought to the table immediately. And its good stuff. Very dense yet soft. I could have filled up on just this. I do wish they supplied some softer butter in a dish however, instead of the near-frozen packs of single-serving butter.

I wasn't too hungry so settled with a crab cake and a bowl of the creamy clam chowder. The wait wasn't too long for the food. Crab cake looked solid yet it was so small for the $13 pricetag. Taste-wise though I was a little let down. I was hoping for something better for the price and the location. Fishermans Wharf!

The clam chowder changed that though. This stuff is amazing. Very rich and tasty and most surely terribly bad for you. They probably just put a ton of butter in there with the fresh clams - but it was hard to resist. The weather wasn't too cold today, but I can see this really hitting the spot on a cold evening. As it was it was still incredibly good. And of course it wasn't cheap, but in this case I feel it was worth the price.

The wife got the crab pasta and also really enjoyed her dish. For me, though, this place will become my restaurant when I am on the pier and want a quick bowl of chowder and fresh sourdough bread.
