Oh the memories I've had at Gordo Taqueria. I used to live in the Richmond district years ago and 2 Gordo locations were in walking distance. If I had to estimate how many visits, I'd guess 20 with most of them at the Geary location. Since we had a request for the Clement location, I made the 25 minute trek to my old stomping grounds. Seems like nothing has changed since my last visit, new faces but same old menu.

Although tempted with the super burrito with a 14' tortilla, I went regular carnitas with quacamole, salsa, rice, and beans.

tortilla - I cringed as the burrito maker steamed my burrito. tortilla didn't taste like a fatty pancake and was lacking in the lard deparment.

beans - refried, a tad on the salty side

rice - dry and bland, I don't know why I keep ordering rice with my burritos, it's a bad bay area habit, you won't catch me doing this in San Diego

salsa - I could barely taste any

guacamole - heavy on serving size, it overwhelmed everything.

carnitas - heavy on the salt, no crunchiness, very moist and tender, could have used more meat.

What the heck happened? Do old memories of Gordo burritos cloud my ability to give Gordo Taqueria a fair rating. This burrito is rating around 6.5 right now. The burrito on a whole was fairly bland and quite disappointed I drove 25 minutes for this? If you knew the selection of taquerias I have on B Street in San Mateo, you'd be pissed too. The only reason I'm giving a 7 is because the 20 or so other times I've visited were 7.5-8 rated burritos.

This is a review of the Solano Ave. location in Albany (Berkeley)

We used to come here weekly, after partying or just in need of a cheap filling meal. I came here to order take out after a lunch at Zachary's earlier this week.

It's more or less a hole in the wall with a sign, the interior is adorned with what I'm guessing are traditional weaved leather stools and bottles of tapitio sauce. You walk up to the counter and place your order, they'll give you a recipt and you get to wait anywhere you wish. Depending on when you arrive there might be a long line, it's usually 4-6 deep.

I ordered the chicken quesadilla with all the fixings to go. By the time I got it my buldging stomach from Zachary's somehow made room. I couldn't resist and helped myself to a piece and offered the rest to friends.

Delicious. This is one greasy quesadilla, they actually dip the tortilla in oil before they start working with it on the grill, then adding a generous amount of cheese and chicken it's folded, melted, cut then served with guac, sour cream, and salsa. So good that I waited in line to order another, this one made it home.

I wish there was a south bay location.
