For as large a city San Francisco is, the late night restaurant selections are slim. An old friend was flying the red eye for a 245AM layover and needed eat some comfort food. After doing my searches on the internets, I found Grubstake on Pine street. Open until 4AM everyday and attracts some of the most interesting people I've ever seen. We almost saw a fight in the diner, spoon heads, 1 hooker, club goers, a set of cops, homeless person, tourists, and Lassie. It's my kind of late night dining experience.

Burgers and Portuguese food are the things to get here and I was completely sold on the fried egg burger idea. Labeled as 'The Nugget', it's a 1/3 lb burger with lettuce, onions, tomato, fried egg, thick bacon, cheese, in a bun. Ordered my burger medium done with fried, we chatted, and admired the atmosphere. The restaurant has been in business for almost 80 years and taken up residence in a rail car for the last 30. Parking isn't bad at 3 in the morning but doubt I can say that at 5PM.

The plates of burgers arrived open faced and the fried eggs were glistening with happiness. The fries appear to be fresh cut fries and tasted like giant size in-n-out style fries. The sesame buns were lightly toasted but the bottom bun was kinda soggy with grease. The burger had grill marks which leads me to believe it's over an open flame. Cooked medium and the grade of meat was good. On the juicy and greasy side but definitely a grade over the fast food joints. The veggies were good and I always admire an excellent cut tomato on any burger. The bacon was thick but it wasn't what sealed the deal. The fried egg was the winner and adds depth to the overall taste of the burger. beef-cheese-egg-bacon combo is an unbeatable combo and one step closer to a heart attack.

Not exactly the healthiest stuff you should be eating but you'll thank Grubstake for serving you a late night meal to send you off to bed. I'll be the 1st to admit it's one hell of a greasy burger but some things were meant to be. My burger with fries and a coke was about $11. It's a great meal to soak up the alcohol and there aren't many other places I'd eat at this late at night. I'd rate the burger at 7.5 but bump the overall score to 8 for being open so damm late.
