I was reading the history of San Francisco and Hang Ah Tea Room popped as the oldest chinese restaurant in the city. Opened in 1920 and still going strong. The location of the restaurant in an alley facing a playground. The outside of the building is a bit run down but dont let those looks scare you away. The entrance will lead you to a sparkling clean chinese restaurant with vibrant lime green and orange painted walls.

Im getting a good vibe with the waiters and everyone seemed to be enjoying their food. We came here for the dim sum but unfortunately no carts were roaming the floor. I went with a light lunch and ordered the combination lunch for $7.95.

The combination lunch comes with har gow, shu mei, bbq pork bun, potsticker, and bbq pork fried rice. The rice was just ok, nothing special. I normally dont order fried rice since plain white sticky rice is the way to go. Pork bun was very sweet the bun was soft and you can tell these were made fresh. The dim sum samplers were excellent and the perfect size. I think a lot of other chinese restaurants make the mistake of making oversized bland dim sum. Although I only had 5 dim sum pieces, I was impressed with the mixture and freshness of the items.

For $7.95, I was still hungry...I should have ordered more but we were planning on hitting Golden Gate Bakery afterwards (btw..we walked over and the line was HUGE, maybe next time). I need to give another visit to Hang Ah Tea Room and OD on dim sum to get the full effect. I was quite happy with what I ate and would recommend visiting. Parking is dreadful in chinatown and dont bother looking. Take a bus/taxi in or park on California, walk 3 blocks.

I find eating in San Francisco to be very hit or miss and you can *never* judge a book by its cover. Hang Ah Tea Room was in chinatown with its entrance on an alleyway. Once you walk in, it still appears to be somewhat abandoned until you turn and see a bright and very clean dining room in front of you (it's also right next to a playground, if you want to burn off some of those calories after). We sat down and were greeted promptly. I ordered a lunch dim sum and a bowl of Won Ton noodle soup.

The noodle soup left something to be desired. It was just a warm beef broth with a lot of noodles, some small won tons and bok choi(sp) on top. It didn't have a lot of flavour, but it was a huge bowl. So if you're looking for a lot of something mild, I'd recommend this.

The dim sum was pretty good. I got a plate with a bbq pork bun, shrimp and pork steamed dumplings and a pot sticker. The later 3 were all delicious and the pork bun was probably good, but I only ate the bready part. It was much bigger than I had seen at other dim sum places, but Jason said it was a pretty standard size.

Overall, I liked this place. The service was good, the dining room was clean and orderly and the food was pretty tastey. If I found myself in the area again, I'd eat there and try some of the more exotic foods. However, I'm not sure I'd ever go too far out of my way to find it.
