We made the trek up to San Francisco for a little saturday afternoon dim sum feast at Lucky Fortune. The dim sum items aren't picked from trays or carts but from a limited dim sum menu. There's about 64 items on the menu which are made to order. Prices are cheap and portion sizes are even better. The tables are kinda a communal setting with 4 seats per table. Since it was just my friend and I, some random guy sat next to us while he shared the other table. When it comes to dim sum, I think I have a large appetite and my friend easily dwarves what I can take down. We thought we started out small with 10 items but little did we realize that Lucky Fortune would be putting us down for the count.

Service is speedy with little communication with the waiters. Once a dim sum item would be delivered, they'd mark off your menu then return with more items. This repeated about 6 times filling our table up with bite sized goodies. There was a family of 5 next to us and they didn't order nearly as much food as we did.

siu mai $1.80 - a dim sum staple of mine. I made the mistake of biting into these hot little nuggets of meat and burned the roof of my mouth. One thing is for sure, the dim sum at Lucky Fortune isn't sitting around long. Once it's cooked, it's heading directly to your table. If you haven't had siu mai before, it's basically a pork dumpling. Very popular item to order. Very good, repeat order for sure. (picture #10)

bbq pork buns $1.80 - like little white soft pillows filled with a sweet bbq pork. Small enough to eat in 4 bites but enough flavor to please the largest of stomachs. each bun comes out to 60 cents a piece. repeat order.(picture #6)

shanghai style pork dumplings $1.80 - probably my least favorite of the dim sum. I was expecting a soupy filling inside but was more of a ground pork mix with a lot of ginger. It was ok but nothing like I've had at shanghai restaurants. I'd probably skip this one on my next visit. (picture #5)

egg custard tarts $1.80 - flaky and not too sweet, just the way I like them. layer upon layer of soft pastry just waiting to mix in with the egg custard. not the best I've had but still very good. (picture #9)

shrimp and leaks $2.50 - absolutely the best dim sum I've had at any restaurant. the dough was sticky, shrimps firm, and the leak/shrimp mix was steaming hot with a hearty portions of garlic. the stinking rose is enough to send vampires back in their coffins. If you visit, be sure to eat 3 for me. (picture #12)

har gow $2.50 - 4 large pieces completely filled with chopped shrimp, water chestnuts, and bamboo. The dough was kinda sticky if they were just pulled from a steaming boiler. Cooked to order and will burn your mouth if you're too eager. Excellent tasting item. (picture #11)

chinese broccoli $4 - this was a great bargain, if you have ever ordered this dish at a upscale chinese restaurant, you might see this dish go for $12. The portion size, texture, and color was excellent. An easy repeat order and it's only $4. (picture #7)

salt and pepper shrimp $4 - another good value item, do you see a pattern at Lucky Fortune? freshly cooked dishes and cooked perfectly. This dish is served a bit smaller than the $10 dishes you see for dinner but at $4, you can't complain. Just the right amount of salt and lightly batter goodness make this a must have order. I don't even bother to remove the shell when eating these things, it's just too good. (picture #8)

Everything about Lucky Fortune was a hit in my book. The restaurant is clean and service was stellar. The food comes out piping HOT and prices are very reasonable. We ordered 10 plates of food for $26 with tax. Not too bad considering we both left with bloated stomachs. Another thing I like about Lucky Fortune is the late hours (Sun-Thu until 11PM, Fri-Sat until 12AM). Parking on Geary might be tough, you can try parking on Anza or Balboa. It might not have the insane dim sum selection like Koi Palace or Mings but for what it offers, it does really well. I like Lucky Fortune and will be adding it to my personal dim sum restaurant list.
