I was down in San Francisco with the family to see the Titanic exhibit at the Metreon. I knew there was a Mels nearby so wanted to give it a review. Yeah I know its a chain. But with 4 places in SF and another 4 in Southern California, I figured its not large enough to escape Jatbar.

We arrived about 11:30 on this sunday for lunch and were seated immediately. We scanned the menu for all of 30 seconds when the waitress came by to take our orders. Wow, talk about fast service! We asked for more time. Another minute passed and another waitress came by to ask for our order. Wow most impressive. It seemed like the waitresses weren't responsible for specific tables, rather they rotated and shared the load. This meant that we were never long without someone attending to us. It did, however, make it difficult to know who to ask for our check from.

The food arrived relatively quickly given how busy the place was. A line started forming after we were seated. I went with the Veggie Burger, french fries, and a vanilla malt.

The malt arrived first and was of a good size, with the metal tin included, tho it only included a few ounces in it. Malts are usually always good, but this one was a step above the standard stuff you get at fast food joints. a bit richer in flavor but nothing completely mind-blowing. I would order it again, but its not a must-experience item.

Fries were completely standard, a bit greasy.

I enjoyed the veggie burger. Bun was just ok, the veggie pattie was not your normal boca, but had mixed in rice, red peppers, mushrooms in it that gave it some extra substance and flavor. It was also accompanied with sprouts, tomato, lettuce, cheese. All of the veggies were fresh and good tasting. The ketchup and mustard was on the table, and a small pat of mayo came with the burger. The size of the burger was standard, maybe a bit smaller than a Red Robin burger, but it was flavorful for what it was. I think next time, however, I will probably try something else off the rather large menu.

Prices were a bit high, but this is San Francisco after all. If I was in the mood for a good veggie experience, I am not sure Mels would be my #1 location, but it was a tasty indulgence when combined with the Malt. And as you can see by the cool kids-meal cars, its a family-friendly restaurant as well.

I stopped by here after watching a movie at the Metreon with my friends, and we ordered up seating for 10. It took them about 20 minutes to figure it out, but I tossed it off to it being late and understaffed. The service wasn't very good and a lot of the orders were mixed up. I got a burger and fries, nothing really special. I tried some of my friend's food, the salads, appetizers and such, mostly bland and greasy. Their milkshakes were pretty good, but just standard fare. I wouldn't eat here during the day, and I might opt for denny's across the street instead, but it's not too bad for what you can get late at night.
