I have 4 reasons why I don't drive to San Francisco for sandwiches; Stangelini's Deli, Sam's Italian Sandwich Co, Darby Dans, and Little Lucca Sandwich Shop. If you've visited any of these shops, you'll know what I'm talking about. I was having a discussion the other day about sandwich shops in San Francisco and Submarine Center was brought up about being one of the best. I remembered seeing that place when I visited Bullshead the other day. It's only a 20 minute drive and I was dying of hunger.

Parking can be a tight squeeze on the weekdays as permits are needed during the day. If you visit on the weekends, you can find spots on Claremont and off neighborhood streets. The sandwich shop is a shoebox. Claustrophic people should send their friends to order their sandwiches. You should have seen how many people there were, we were like packed sandines.

Ordering can be confusing as there are no signs to which side you order on. With people milling around, you don't have a clue who's ordered and who's waiting. Just make your way to the front and hope one of the sandwich makers ask for your order. I split my order between a mini submarine sandwich and center cut pastrami.

All sandwiches are put through the oven for serious bread toasting action. Bread, mustard, meat, onions, cheese and placed in over for a couple of minutes. After that, it's layered with tomatoes shredded lettuce, mayo, and secret sauce (italian dressing). Prices start at $4.25 for a mini and upwards to $7 for the super. I was lucky to land a table and it's a tight fit inside.

submarine - 2 types of ham, italian salami, cheese, loads of meat, perfect combo, definitely worth trying. I'd rate it 9.

pastrami - sliced thin pastrami, kept warm over a steel boiler, it was good, tasted great. I'd easily order Submarine Center's pastrami submarine. I'd rate it 8.5. I'm more of a Katz deli type of pastrami type of guy, meaning, for a 9-9.5 rated pastrami, it needs to be sliced right off the brisket. I probably sound like an elitist snob but just telling you how it is :)

bread - awesome, some of the best sandwich bread I've had in the area. I love having the bread toasted but don't eat it too fast or you'll end up with captain crunch mouth. Did I say how the toasted french bread kicks ass?

toppings - all veggies tasted fresh, nothing too gourmet but for this type of sandwich, it works extremely well. The secret sauce is italian dressing and never been much of a fan until now. It was perfect on both sandwich and I think the key to enjoying it was eating the sandwiches quickly. If you let the sandwich sit too long, toasted bread gets soggy, won't taste the same.

Is Submarine Center worth my 20 minute drive? Hell yeah, their sandwiches are excellent and addicting. Legend says the bread is made from the finest columbian cocaine flour. Don't rat Submarine Center to DEA or Police, you'll sink it for the rest of us.
