I have been on a serious burger binge for the last month or so. Having visited Big Mouth Burger the other week, I was excited in trying another contender for 'make jasons stomach happy with a burger'. We have gotten some requests for Taylors Refresher on the Embarcadero in San Francisco.

I made the trek up to the city and traffic was light. I fretted about the parking situation but as the gods of parking were on my side today, I found a spot right across the street. Metered parking sucks especially when its 25 cents for every 8 minutes, and sucks even more when Taylors takes a tad longer than other places. They do cook from scratch so I'll give them that.

Taylors is originally from St. Helena and judging from the new digs on Ferry Plaza, they must have made a killing for this prime real estate. Sort of a diner feel to it with modern steel chairs and counter tops. This place is huge and can imagine all the suits coming down from the high perched concrete towers to devour this $7 burger. My meal came out to a somewhat high priced $11 which consisted of cheeseburger, fries, and small coke.

fries - good fries, has some sort of batter to it, almost like the ones you get at Jack in the Box

bun - egg roll, moist, very rich.

toppings - lettuce was soaked in grease, 2 slices of ripe tomatoes, american cheese. No onions?? I was disappointed with the lettuce as the heat/grease turn it into something that has the texture of wet toilet paper.

secret sauce - ok, hmmmm ketchup and mayo with homemade relish? I liked it but it was too overwhelming. They drowned my burger and it was just leaking all over the place. I even did the napkin wipe. The worst part was it masked the entire flavor of the meat...sigh.

meat - cooked over fire yay, drowned in secret sauce...boooo. I couldnt tell you what the meat really tasted like. Patty wasnt too big, just about average. It looked ok but I couldnt tell you if it smelled like steak. Thats one of the 1st things I look for in my burger battery of tests. Another thing I noticed was the overwhelming amount of grease all over the lettuce and bun. My bun was soggie and brown.

I really wanted to like Taylors Refresher, everything about the place was yelling, we make good burgers, look at our grill. But in the end, it came up short on making my favorite burgers list. The meal is $2-3 too high and thats not including the parking situation. The secret sauce overwhelmed the beef and I wondered if getting another patty would have helped the situation. $5 shake, I undertstand you guys are using Double Rainbow Ice Cream but if I ordered a cheeseburger, fries, and shake, I would be spending close to $15?

There is light at the end of the tunnel. The service and atmosphere at Taylors Refresher is refreshing indeed. From the time they took my order, sat down at the clean table, and for as many people they had in the place, my food came out in a reasonable amount of time. Id come back to Taylors Refresher and try another burger. Its possible I hit them on the day secret sauce attacked all its customers but I believe theres a good burger under the orange goop.

I have to say the San Francisco location is more style over substance. If you're willing to drive up to their Wine Country roadside location, you'll be rewarded with a FANTASTIC burger and/or shake.

But I digress... This location does have a solid burger on the menu if you're in the mood for one. It's closer to an 'In 'N Out' burger and the sauce is similar as well. A bit greasy though.

If you're in the mood for a more solid restaurant style type burger, head to Barney's (and order a side of fries).

Ahi Tuna Burger

Ahi Tuna Burger is great. You can't get it anywhere else. Sweet potato fries are a winner as well.
