We drove by here on Monday and A Slice of NY was closed. Waited until Wednesday to come back and this time we brought one of the O.G. agents Brandon with us. It's not often we see Brandon but today was a special occasion. We were celebrating his departure from Microsoft with thin sliced NY slices.
A Slice of New York is located on Stevens Creek next to JJ's Blues bar. They are open late 6 days a week and closed on Mondays. Between 11-2PM, A Slice of NY offers a lunch special, 2 slices and free drink. I ordered a slice of sicilian cheese and pepperoni.
The sicilian slice is square-shaped with a thicker dough. Plenty of sauce and not too oily. I had plain cheese with oregano shake. Decent stuff but I think I'll stick to the regular NY slice.
The pepperoni slice had an abundant amount of pepperonis. There was a deep puddle of grease which I needed to soak up with paper napkins. Comes with the territory so no complaints here. The cheese wasn't overwhelming, just about right. Everything was looking good so far with the exception of the crust. It had the NY thinness but middle portion of my slice was gummy and undercooked. Other than that, it was a good tasting slice.
I gotta hand it to A Slice of New York for creating a piece of New York in the bay area. You can count I'll be back.
I must preface this by admitting that I went to NYU in the early 90s and tried lots of slice pizza. It has thus had an impact on my scoring for thin sliced cheese pizza (come on, nobody puts toppings on a REAL slice). Anyway, I find myself mostly unimpressed when it comes to bay area slices. There are exceptions, but they are few and far between.
So I was a little down when we drove by 'A Slice of New York' - great, another 'authentic' NY place. We finally get inside and . . . wow. . . this place looks pretty cool. I give them an A for effort. You feel like you have stepped into NYC - ok, not that much cause they REALLY overdo the NYC stuff in here. Which is cool for folks like me who miss the big Apple. But ultimately, things will come down to the pies that are coming out of their oven. Do they stand the test?
I went with 2 slices of cheese and a soda. Their lunch special. The pizzas were out on the counter - so into the oven they went for a quick reheat. I was not expecting a Stromboli's slice or even a legendary (but now closed) St Mark Pizza slice, but I was hoping for some authenticity.
The pizza was out and onto the paper plate. I take it to the seating area and YES, they have the garlic salt. This is key, but oh so rare around here. Let me run through it quickly now. I found the cheese to be spot on. They did this right. 9.0. The sauce was also VERY good. Excellent job here. 9.0. Then the crust. It was a bit soggy, undercooked? It was not bad, for sure, but the taste was off (some say you need the NYC water) and it was just too gummy for me. So the crust was maybe 7.5-8 range. I will average it with a solid 8.5.
This is still good stuff, and they are on their way to top tier NYC pizza places in the Bay Area. I had no problems polishing off my slices easily. Compared to other stuff in this part of the bay, you would be hard pressed to find anything near this quality. Maybe they are experiencing some learning process or the ovens are still getting seasoned. This could be just the beginning of something legendary. I will be back.
Ok, I admit it. I'm spoiled by the pizza they serve out here in California. In other words, not having ever been in New York, I have no basis for comparison. Finding myself at the surplus next door, I decide on a quick snack before heading home. I walk in and trip out on the NY stuff. Pretty cool. The counter guy was super friendly and got my peperoni and cheese up and out of the glass and into the oven for a quick reheat. I grab a seat at the counter and the my slice reappears. Its a nice warm slice. I fold it over and let the pepperoni grease dribble a bit. Not bad. Again, the pizzas you get out here on the left coast tend to eat like meals while the NY slice ate like a snack. It was good though, so I'll be back. For a quick bite, A Slice of New York fits the bill.
“REALLY great NY style pizza. Very fresh ingredients, awesome mild tomato sauce in just the right amount. Highly recommended! Owner is super friendly as well. Only stopping point is the lack of seating area, but on a nice day you can sit outside! =D”

reward: pizza sign
“The guys at A Slice made a cool pizza sign for the sidewalk. Some asshat stole it. Its a metal sign that kinda looks like a subway indicator from New York. Bring back the sign!!”

Chees Slice, Sicilian Slice
“Go with the sicilian slice. The NY style is good, but not great. The people and service make up for it though - these guys (and gal) are very nice.”

Pepperoni and 'shroom pizza, meatball sub
“I have tried them all in the South Bay and this is the best thin crust of the bunch. (Blows Cicero's away, in my opinion.) Try the meatball sub. Bread, sauce, cheese and meatballs are each delicious, and combined form a transcendent sandwich.”

“MUCH better than its 8.25 rating. Up there with Cicero's in my opinion.”

“It is good enough to calm my fear that my children would grow up thinking CA pizza was pizza. It is as close to East Coast pizza as it's gonna get. ”

Cheese, sicilian and cannoli
“Damn good! Although not quite NY (there's something in the East Coast water), it's Arinell-quality pizza. That's saying a LOT. Decent cannoli, too. Keep up the good work!”

custom stromboli
“My coworker commented that my stromboli was a work of art. Indeed it was: crispy browned dough, lightly brushed with oil and piping hot out of the oven. It was super tasty too, especially when liberally sprinkled with oregano and garlic.”

“Been here three times. These guys are 3 min. from my front door. Great pizza. Welcome to the neighborhood Slice of New York!”
