Adelitas Taqueria marks our 100th restaurant review for mexican cuisine. We found this place through jatboard and heard it was suppose to be a decent eat. For a taqueria joint, this place is clean with decorative movie posters. The lady behind the counter seemed like a sweetheart and took my order with a smile.
I ordered my usual carnitas burrito and by the time I got to my table, the burrito was ready.
tortilla - streamed, very moist, it was ok. Im more of a fan of grilled tortillas.
carnitas - wasnt crunchy, more of stewed type, plenty of meat.
beans - I asked for refried and they gave me regular pinto beans, still tasted good
chips and salsa - kinda weak, the chips are probably from those giant bags from costco and salsa tasted like they were using canned tomatoes with onions, and cilantro. Its disappointing that they charge $1 when most mexican restaurants provide that for free. On the other hand, their bottled red hot sauce is super good. Has a slight kick to it and wished I had that at home.
Adelitas Taqueria comes in about average tasting for me. The burrito was large and restaurant was very clean. Id come back if I was in the area. I am told the Tacos are the thing to get and thats my mistake for not ordering that, the draw of carnitas is too strong for me.

For me, Adelitas didn't quite click. The place looked legit enough, the menu looked solid. I ordered the Super Veggie Burrito as usual. I think this might have been my mistake. No doubt they are probably better with their meats. In fact, the whole experience reminded me of Estebans in Fremont. The white rice, the lackluster veggies. Just like Estebans, you need to go with meat here.
The chips and salsa were decent, I'll give them that. And the burrito wasn't bad, just nothing I would want to try again. If I was to return, I would probably hunt down something else off the menu.

Both of us are huge fans of Adelita's... when we first moved to the area, we tried a handful of Mexican restaurants, and this one bubbled to the top. These are the big 'pros' for us:
1. close to home 2. good price 3. whole beans 4. large chunks of tasty avocado (not guac, just avo) 5. good horchata 6. great breakfasts 7. spicy and smoky sauces
I have tried the carnitas at Adelita's but have found that the straight up veggie burrito is my favorite. They add some sauteed mushrooms along with the beans, rice and cheese. As I mentioned, I also go for the avocado and salsa. I was initally a fan of the smokey red hot sauce, but have found that I enjoy the verde sauce more - a little sweet and tangy. More flavorful.
As I said, the breakfasts are also great. Good chilaquiles (corn tortillas fried with some cheese and eggs, side of beans and rice). The breakfast burrito is also a monster - eggs, ham or chorizo, cheese, onions, peppers. It's big, and I have found that it works best on a weekend day, when I can return home for a nap. They also serve menudo on the weekends, which seems to be a big hit. I have yet to venture down that path, but plenty of others have. The weekend mornings are pretty packed with menudo lovers.
Other items that we've tried, and are good... taco salad & carnitas plate.
Not sure Adelita's is worth the trip alone, but if you are in the area and need to fill up your tummy, certainly a tasty bet. |

Adelitas Taqueria - San Jose
Heres a good example of “dont judge a book by its cover”. The run down strip mall Adelitas is located in is only a façade. Inside is a jazzed up colorful Taqueria. Its around 8 pm last night at a friends house and weve forgotten about dinner. We're all hungry! How about burritos, I suggest. My buddy Phil recommended Adelitas after I mention popping by another new Taqueria down the street. Hey, didnt Jatbar review that place? Yeah, sure, lets give it a try!
As I walked in, everything looked tidy and clean and Im a stickler about this. In my formal life as a catering manager I was down right anal about safety, so my scrutinized eye comes in handy. The young, late teen something girl behind the counter was a sweetheart to me too. (Jason mentions in his review) I order 3 super carne asada burritos and one regular chicken. She asked if I would like to add cheese to the regular. BIG PET PEEVE of mine…. why am I paying extra for cheese? The regular burrito is already priced at $4.95. Okay, sure, I know my gal friend expects cheese in her chicken burrito.
“Add hot sauce”. This seemed to be a challenge for the guy preparing my order. He asked the gal in Spanish three times about this. She assured him thats what I wanted. I wasnt asking for Chinese duck sauce here. I even spoke up in my cruddy broken Spanish that 'si' all 3 carne asada burritos should have hot sauce inside. Whats so weird about this? They include salsa (which is just really pico) in the super burrito but we like it spicy. This was worth the hassle… great kick, with tang and flavor.
Your standard flour tortilla has a nice twist… they actually melt 2 slices of cheese right onto it. Thats cool! Guaranteed melted cheese goodness in each bite. Even though the tortilla was grilled, Iu couldnt tell after a 15 minute sit inside the foil wrapper. Keep that in mind folks… to enjoy a grilled tortilla you gotta eat it right away as the foil created a “steamed” effect. The flat grilled carne asada was really good: moist, tender and full of marinated flavor. The beans were the standard fare, nothing spectacular. I am always happy to have NO RICE, as tasty Spanish rice is hard to come by and it detracts from my “authentic burrito experience”. The avocado was great, chunky and firm, not mushy, and well distributed. Sour Cream was meager, would have liked more.
Over all, a good tasty burrito, I give it a solid 8. I have to kick them down a notch to 7.5 though, because my friends chicken burrito was soggy and she wound up dripping juice all over a plate. I'm surprised since I asked for the melted cheese addition, which should guard against this. She said it was good, but couldnt comment too much on the flavor with her bad head cold.
Note: I saw no difference in size between the regular burrito ($4.95) and super burrito ($5.95). Best pick is their super burrito. For this $1 more they include avocado, melted cheese, and sour cream. Parking out front is decent, but I can't comment on busy lunch time parking. Good value for the size... Visa, Mastercard, Dicover, Amex and lucky for me, ATM. Great pick and if in the area, and I would make a return visit…
