Jays had the urge for cheesesteaks so he found Amatos Cheesesteaks off the internet. We arrived around noon and this place was packed...truly a good sign for any restaurant, right??

I wasnt in the mood for a cheesesteak so I ordered the meatball sandwich. I got the shorty which is 7....is that really small??? shhheeesshh...it arrived and holy cow..it was gigantic. Meatballs were the size of a cueball...marinera was all over the place...you literally needed a knife and fork to eat this messy sucker.

So how the hell was it...sauce was watery tomatos with no herbs or spices, meat was this giant ball of tasteless matter, cheese and bread were good. I wouldnt order this again.

Although I didnt like my sandwich, I still have faith that Amatos Cheesesteak has potential. Next visit will have to be a hoagie.

About the cheesesteak...I had a small bit of it but not enough to make an opinion. Jay will have to write his review and tell you his opinion...thats if he gets off his skinny ass.

RETURN VISIT for Jason! 9/28/2004 - 7.5 Rating: Terry happened to be in the area of Amatos so he picked me up a turkey hoagie. I got the small and wooo-dammnnn, it was huge. I was only able to eat half. Bread was overwhelming, too much bread for my sandwich, turkey was deli cut, and cheese was white cheddar. I liked my sandwich and would try another one but it wasnt a mind blowing experience.

RETURN VISIT for Jason! 7/7/2005 - 7.5 Rating: I had to make a return visit as Carlos made a good point that I should try the cheesesteaks and rate it accordingly. I dont know why I didnt order one the 1st two times, it is called Amatos Cheesesteaks.

I remember the sandwiches are quite large so I ordered a small steak sandwich with white cheddar and onions. The bread is fresh and my favorite part of the sandwich. Steak was cut very thin and seasoned with pepper and salt. It was a little on the bland side but luckily the cheese and onions were able to save it. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I would have dashed some tabasco. Its worth a visit if you are in the area.

I was in the neighborhood so decided to give them a try. I arrived about 1pm and the line was LONG. I was in shock. This has got to be good stuff. Well I place my order and wait about 10-15 minutes. Wow, a long wait. My food is ready and I bring it back to the office. I ordered the Cheese Hoagie which is a cold sandwich. I instantly munch on it. The sourdough bread is amazing. VERY good stuff. The rest is kind of salady. Lots of peppers, pepperochinos, lettuce, tomato, white american cheese. No doubt its good stuff. Worth $7? I don't think so. Worth the long wait? I don't think so. Would I return? Sure, maybe I'll try the tuna hoagie or maybe brave a cheesesteak. The cheesesteak did look pretty good on their grill. Just heaps and heaps of it. Amazing.

Amatos serves enormous sandwiches.
i haven't been able to write a review in a while, and this visti was a couple of weeks ago, so maybe i am a little rusty. but i have been here several times. for some cheesesteak perspective, i am a california native, but i did spend about six months living in south philly in 2001. i lived a scant two subway stops and about two blocks on foot from the mecca of cheesteaks, where kitty-corner from eacth-other are the two 24-hour cheesesteak juggernaughts, Pat's (where the sandwich was invented) and Gino's.....

amatos is pretty close to the real deal, with a mojor exception being that the sandwiches are huge! the 'shorty', listed at seven inches, is more than a person should consume in one sitting. I couldn't imagine being hungry enough to tackle a footlong. The bread is the hardest thing to replicate on the west coast, for a cheesesteak, and amatos soft roll is the closest thing i've had out here to the kind i used to get in philly. except it is clearly bigger. steaks in philly were loaded in to rolls of smaller diameter. same length. similar thinckness, smaller around.

i reccomend a second visit to try an italian hoagie.
my favorite steak is 'the works' with onions, peppers, mushrooms.....
the krinkle cut fries don't look that special, and with the size of these sandwiches, who has room anyway.
low marks for a pepsi fountain instead of coke. but whatever. pictures of philly and rewviews adorn the walls.

this place is located next to the best tattoo shop around, too. Guru Tattoo.

i am not sure what else to say about the steaks. the meat quality is on par with my expectations, as are the cheese and produce. just don't go here unless you are really hungry or ready to split a sandwich with someone. if youi are really, really hungry, nothing will hit the spot quite like 'the works' from amatos.

a little side note. i don't think they offer 'whiz' at amatos. cheese whiz is the original ingredient to a cheesesteak, but was clearly not the most popular choice by my philly friends. american or provalone were the standards, but every authentic place seved whiz, too.

I've eaten here a few times as this is the one of the two places I know of to get a cheesesteak, and the other place has the shortest hours ever. Anyways, I've only tried the mushroom avocado cheesesteak, and the cheese fries. Some people may think their cheesefries are a weakness as they are just steak cut fries covered with nacho cheese, but I like them. I am quite fond of nacho cheese, and I don't like shredded cheese to be melted on fries, nachos, and the like.

I thought my cheesesteak was a bit pricey as I only wanted half of what I got and I remembered paying less for my order (I got a few bills back as change from a $20 after buying a cheesesteak, cheese fries, and a drink). It took 4 meals for me to get rid of that thing, it was so big. I bought the smallest size, which I believe was 6' but it seemed a lot bigger. Anyways, I loved how the meat was cooked, it was very tender, and the juices that came out of the meat when I bit into it was delectable. The cheese they used melted nicely, and overall it was very good.

The staff wasn't too friendly with me, and I had to wait a long time to get my food even though there weren't many people in the restaurant at the time. Also, they need to get to-go boxes for their food. When I asked for a box for my cheese fries, they gave me another one of those little hot dog trays that the fries came in, and I had to put it upside down on top of my fries, resulting in cheese explosion inside the bag.

Other than that, I would go there again, but I'd probably bring a friend to share my food with.

Mommy ate...

cheese steak and pepper/onion cheesesteak

Two shorties were enough for all four of us. They were kind enough to cut and put the 2 sandwiches in 4 baskets and give us extra paper baskets to share the biggg order of fries. Tasty, moist sandwiches. Bread is right amt of chewy. I love this place

Pepper Cheesesteak

Dropped in here spur of the moment last Saturday (10/7/06) and ordered a "Shorty" pepper cheesesteak - it was enormous (and equally delicious). I also noticed a guy behind the counter building a massive Italian sub that made me drool.
