Daybreak Donuts came in as a wishlist request from Jeremy. He was talking some pretty bold words, so of course I went in there with a guarded apprehension. At Jatbar, we have heard many tall tales from excited fans of restaurants. And usually we are let down. But in this case, it was spot on.

I sampled the crumb cake, the coconut over glaze, and the old fashioned.

The crumb cake tasted like a cake. The dough was soft and fresh and very sweet. The crumbs had a nice cinnamon flavor which usually doesn't come across as strongly in other shops' crumb cake donuts. The coconut donut was something different that I don't usually order but came recommended. It was a regular glazed donut with coconut sprinkled on top. The glazed part of it wasn't as strong as, say, Stans, but it was still solid. As a fan of coconut, I found it tasty, and hard to resist finishing. The old fashioned had a strong buttermilk flavor, something usually completely lacking in other shops old fashioned donuts.

While Stans still has better glazed donuts, I think the taste of the individual donuts really comes through here at Daybreak. If you want to really distinguish the flavors of each donut and savor each morsel, then Daybreak is the place for you. For me, its somewhat on the way to work, definitely worth stopping by in the morning if on the 680.

RETURN VISIT for Terry! 6/18/2005 - 9 Rating: I have a confession to make. I went to Daybreak Donuts on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of this week and tried all of their donuts nearly. My favorites are the raised glazed and the small plain. The one downside is that the donuts are not warm at 7am when I arrive. I had Stans on Friday and did the back-to-back challenge more or less. At 10am, Stans was piping hot. Like, unnaturally hot. It was so good. Its a tough call. Stans is a thicker, doughier donut, whereas when you bite into a Daybreak raised glaze, it deflates as you bite into it. Very light and airy. I like them both equally well and cannot pick a winner.
