Coming off a successful cheap lunch yesterday at Dakao, we wanted to try out King Eggroll. We heard the prices were quite the bargain and portions that rivaled Sogo Tofu. We arrived during the lunch rush and greeted with a packed parking lot :) I waited 2-3 minutes for a spot and we are off to the long lines. This place is a mad house! There are 4 different lines so be sure to pick the right one.
I was confused on what to get. I couldve got a sandwich, roasted meats, dim sum, chicken bowls, iced milked teas, or plate lunches. There was a monster selection of food but after scanning the menu, I saw a plate combo with 3 fried shrimp, 1 eggroll, rice, and vegetables for $3.50! I really didnt know how big the plate was going to be so I also ordered 3 chicken wings for $1.80.
Terry was picking up the tab today so after he made his order for lunch, he had to get into another line to pick up his avodcado iced milked, then get into another line to pay for the meal. I dont think he was too thrilled to be running from 1 line to the next.
The wait was short and Terry brought back this bag that must have weighed over 5 lbs. Holy smokes...its a lot of food. There is no way you can finish the whole meal.
fried shrimps - heavy on the batter, super oily, I peeled off half the batter to eat it. Rated 6.5.
chicken wings - would have been really good if it wasnt swimming with oil. I know oil comes with the territory but this was way too much. wings were larger than the norm. Rated 6.5
eggroll - damm good eggroll with bits of meat inside, tasted fresh like they made it earlier, heavy on the oil. best part of the meal. 7.5
fried rice - oily, super duper small shrimp - almost the size of a green pea. It was decent tasting. 7
veggies - blah...I had 2 bites and was finished. 6.
I think you know the theme for todays lunch....swimming in oil. Yeah, I understand chinese food is oily and it doesnt bother me most of the time but todays lunch had me feeling ill. I ate 1/3 of my meal and left unsatisfied. I understand food is really cheap here but the quality/taste is something you can pick up at the mall. King Eggroll probably has a loyal local following but for people that dont live in the area, save yourself the trip and find something closer.

I was not impressed with the food here at all. Its like a Panda Express type of place you'd find in the mall. Eggrolls were nothing special (and had meat in them as well). Everything was overly greasy. Prices were good, but if I wanted to eat on the cheap, I think a Top Ramen would be better for me. The one redeeming part of my experience was the Avocado Milk Tea. It wasn't up to Hydration or Dakao levels, but was actually really good.
This place was wildly popular for some reason I don't understand.

It aint a party without a tray of king egg rolls. Just about every party I go to has a tray king egg rolls. When it is some other kind of egg rolls, it is just not good enough. People clean out the egg rolls if its King egg rolls. If you ever want to bring a dish that is a hit, consider some King egg rolls.
I once brought this to a party and one of my friends made a comment about how bad the egg rolls are for you and how his parents owned a Chinese restaurant and sold egg rolls so, he knows they are bad for you. He said he would “never ever eat an egg roll.” I told him he should just try a King egg roll and get over himself. A month later he told me he went to another party and lost on a bet so he had to try a King egg roll. Turns out he ate half a dozen King egg rolls and wanted to tell me how wrong he was about turning down some King egg rolls previously.
Whenever there is a party, I would drive all the way to the original King egg roll on King Rd to pick up a tray of egg rolls. The trays are cheap as $20 can get you a tray of 50 egg rolls, which is more than enough for any party. Usually 30 egg rolls for $12 are enough.
Yes, the egg rolls are somewhat greasy, but not as greasy as most egg rolls. It has to be greasy as they are deep-fried in oil. They make their egg rolls fresh. There is even the option to purchase frozen egg rolls in bulk to fry on your own. My friends and I always pondered about the idea of franchising a King Egg roll in Davis, as we would be a popular join in a college town. Unfortunately King egg roll is a family owned business.
I have tried several items within King egg roll. I have had their rice plates, with choice of fried rice, a nice BBQ roasted chicken leg, with a side of egg roll. I do not particularly like their fried rice as I find it too bland. Their BBQ roasted chicken leg is tasty, but their best item has to be their egg roll as this is what people usually come for. I have also had their Vietnamese sandwiches. The meats are tasty with the pâté, but the bread is not as fresh as Lees, although the sandwiches are cheaper than Lees.
If I were rating the egg rolls alone, I would rate it a 9/10.
Pluses: Cheap, Great egg rolls, cheap dim sum items.
Minuses: Parking is difficult to find during peak hours, service can be forgetful, cash only.

I'm eating as I type here...
Fried Rice - it's A LOT of soy sauce seasoned rice with bits of peas, tiny shrimp, bbq pork, scallions, and egg throughout. the rice itself is very dry and does not clump together, each grain seems to be coated with oil. tastes better then it looks. 7
Chicken Wings - these things arn't from your normal foster farms chicken pen, they must be from some super grain fed chickens because they are HUGE. I just polished off 2 and I don't think I have room for another. Don't like the oil? Blot it off on a napkin, the chicken is moist, fresh and tender inside. I actually like these things. 8.5
Egg Rolls - nothing touches a genuine king egg roll, a comment was made over the weekend that i found shocking. friend's father also owns a panda express style restaurant and catered her party with egg rolls among other items. a guest made the comment, 'Wow, these are ALMOST as good as King Eggrolls.' i was thinking 'ouch' but what a testiment to these local legends.
Definitely not recommended if you're on the drop 20 in 2 weeks program. Bargin Hunting Hunger Hounds on the other hand...get to a king eggroll's near you!

I've had the eggrolls here and it's just not my cup of tea. It's not bad, but I don't like how salty the meat is inside. I much prefer my mother's eggrolls.
The other only thing I've eaten here is the dim sum which is so so. There's no carts and King Eggroll has just the basics. It is fast food afterall. I found that the shrimp har gow had a fastfood greasy after taste to them. The best thing they have going is the chyrsanthermum shrimp balls. It is GOOD. Crispy on the outside and moist shrimp on the inside. My aunt buys a whole tray of them for family gatherings. The place should be named 'King Shrimp Balls' instead of 'King Eggroll'.
