Its friday, sunny outside, we're hungry, what about a burger? I didnt see any burgers on our wish list that were within driving distance, so I googled something burgers and found Mojo burgers in San Jose. This was quite a drive from work so it better be worth it. Off the beaten path, Mojo Burgers is situated in a neighborhood shopping center away from your best buys, borders, etc.
We finally arrived and glad to see they had a mini patio outside. Interior had the hawaiian theme and more importantly an indoor grill with flames shooting through the steel grates. Ordering is easy if you go by the picture menus. Burgers looked big so I wimped out with the single cheeseburger combo.
bun - lightly toasted bread, good stuff
toppings - shredded lettuce, slice of tomato, mayo, slice of cheese, dice onions. Overall, it was fresh.
beef - angus beef, lean, full of flavor, texture was charred on the outside and a tad overdone. Still tasted better than 95% of any chain burgers Ive had.
fries - boatload of potatoes and from the taste of it, I think they cut the potatoes on the spot and fry them up. Better than most burger places.
The Mojo Burger is good but being that Im a big eater, I think the pictures made the burgers look bigger than they are. I would recommend going with the double. Prices might be higher than you are accustomed to but better ingrediants cost more money. Give Mojo Burger a try.

San Jose Rocks.
Every once in awhile, hidden in some rundown corner of a shopping center thats been sitting in the San Jose dustbowl for years, you'll run across a little gem. Something that seems so right, something that you have a niggling feeling will someday become huge. Something that you can say 'I knew them when...'
Mojo Burger is such a place. To me, its everything that In n Out burgers is, without the pretentiousness. Well, maybe thats not the right word, but even In n Out can seem a little plastic and assembly line-ish.
Mojo is clean. Mojo is friendly. Mojo is trying to earn your business. Mojo is the struggling fighter with lots of heart. Mojo feels like its in start-up mode, and wants to do everything right from the get-go.
I was very impressed overall with their operation here. They have all of the above, and veggie burgers to boot! The fries tasted fantastic and fresh like In-n-Out. The buns were fresh-tasting (baked fresh every day?), the boca patty was fantastic. The mixture of condiments in my Veggie burger were a brilliant blend, again reminiscent of In n Out. Just tasting less greasy.
Prices are a little high compared to other burger stands and for what you get with their numbered meals, you will not get burger stand full. Again, though, I think this is good. Who says you need to have a big greasy burger that will kill you for the rest of the day?
Whoah, was that me that said that? Well, ok, I do think the burgers were a little on the small side, but all that means, is that you can head down a few doors to Heavenly Delights for some dessert.
I definitely want to return here again, and maybe sample a vanilla shake next time. Another thing worth noting is that you can order beer as well.
I will definitely return. I just hope they expand northward more, maybe in say, Fremont, near the Albertsons in Warm Springs? haha.

RETURN VISIT for Terry! 1/29/2006 - 8.5 Rating: Hit up Mojo today for my second visit, and am happy to report that it was everything the first visit was. This time I went with the wife and kids. A little bit has changed since my last visit (or maybe it was always there but I noticed more this time). There is now a big 1/2 lb. Big Mo burger. Its everything the normal Mojo Burger is, except instead of 1/3 lb its 1/2 lb. Good for the larger meal. They are also opened for breakfast at 7am. Its mostly the standard diner breakfast menu, except it says Loco Moco coming soon.
Its a great place to bring kids as they have little red kid-sized picnic tables setup next to a flat screen TV in the corner with Nickelodean. The kids can be in their own part of the restaurant with their TV and food, and the adults can be in a quieter section.
I went with the Veggie Mojo combo and a vanilla shake. The fries were a little cold, but still tasty. The burger was great as before. No complaints at all. I look forward to returning again. |

Damn! This is a kick azz burger!
Ive heard from some neighbors that Mojo is the place to get a great burger. I checked out the jatbar ratings and comments then clicked on the web site. Okay, it sounds like everyones in agreement, time for a visit. If you do check out their website they have a neat story! Guy is from Kauai and Oahu and his wife is a local So SJ gal.
Theyre opening a 2nd location if South SJ is too far for you. Not in Fremont, (Sorry Terry) but a little closer that way… in downtown Willow Glen (San Jose) at 1411 Bird Ave. Not sure when the new location will open but their web site will likely say.
I see they welcomed call in orders so I check out the menu online and order the #2, a Double Mojo with cheese combo that comes with fries and a soda. At $8.99 its a big steep, but quality guys… this is QUALITY. Sign on the boor indicated they use nothing but Angus beef.
I walk in 10 minutes later and my order is ready to go. Total was $9.71 with tax. Staff was very friendly and smiled. Yeah, you dont get smiles at McDs, huh? I took a quick look over the place and its spotless… light wood floors, bright colored Hawaiian styled décor, everything was nice, clean and bright. Ill have to eat in next time. Place was ¾ full too…
I also noticed they have Kalua Pig on Fridays and Saturday's. Either a Hawaiian style plate lunch or a kalua pig sandwich. On weekends they serve breakfast too.
I get in the car and enjoy a few fries. These are fresh cut! They tasted quite good and a little ketchup made them better. They were a bit thinner than I like, but the taste wins out that minor quip.
The burger – first off, it weighed a ton! Like a solid brick to be honest. I think I over gauged my hunger. The bun was a sponge type and was toasted – fresh and moist. The two patties were charbroiled, juicy, and so flavorful. Burgers should always be this good. I dont recall having a burger like this at home, to be honest. It was cooked to well done, but with all the e.coli scares lately, youd be hard pressed to find any place cook a burger to medium. Angus beef makes the difference here though! The cheese slices were melting to the paper and were as expected. Produce was fresh and crisp. I opted out on the tomatoes but can say the waffle cut pickles and iceberg still had crunch after the trip home. This was also just the right on the amounts of mayo and ketchup, not overwhelming or soggy.
This thing was a monster! I ate about ¾ and called it quits. WOW! What an awesome burger… A real contender for hall of fame burger. I know, I know - I see Darla's and Val's in SF, I'll have to make it up there sometime, but for this SJ girl, she'll be going back to Mojo's....
