I knew the same Tomisushi sounded familiar. They have a sister location in Mountain View called Sushi Tomi. In my opinion, I think the Sushi Tomi serves some of the best cuts of fish in Mountain View. Back to Tomisushi, as soon as we entered, we got this cool table to the right of the door. It was kind of enclosed so jatbar could conduct some of its food tasting.

Waitress bought out tea and showed us the lunch special. It was a lot of food for the price, Eddie broke down and order the special. I went with the Katsudon and Sashimi bento box. I normally get chicken or beef teriyaki but went with something new today, a pork cutlet.

Pork - for something that was deep fried, it was a little dry. Maybe the meat was extremeley lean. It was ok but the dipping sauce or whatever you call it added nice flavoring to the cutlet. Breading was kept to a minimum and cooked very crunchy

Sashimi - woooow...I love when japanese restaurants give you excellent fresh fish. The maguro was a deep reddish pink color nearly falling apart in your mouth. The sake melted in my mouth and had decent fat stripings throughout the cut. The Sake was my favorite cut of the two.

The service was great and the fish was even better. I wanted to give Tomisushi a 9 but the Katsudon left me wanting another dish. If I were to stick to the sushi, this place would probably rate a 9. Tomisushi should not be missed, try visiting before noon as this place fills up quickly.

I was excited to try something new and, in fact, it was double cool to hear from Jason that Tomisushi was a wishlist request as well. Well we get in and the place is fairly empty for an early monday. Not surprising. We are shown a table in the corner and look over the menu.

The menu is mostly lunch specials, etc, and didn't include too much selection compared to their takeout menu which you see on the site here. Anyway, I finally decide on the shrimp tempura bento box and an order of California Rolls.

The california rolls arrive first and they are of nice size. The rice is kept to a minimum while the real crab inside is stuffed to capacity. So Tomisushi gets high marks for their california rolls.

The bento box arrives and I am a little unimpressed. Seems like the same thing I could get at Suzys for a lot cheaper. The tempura is about average and the vegetables were decent but nothing exciting.

I give my high marks for the california rolls. I hope to return again someday and will stick with the sushi rolls next time.

Just returned from dinner and wow, I AM SO FULL. We were considering Kitsho, Kazoo or Tomisushi tonight and since we've never been to Tomisushi, and we were in a experimental mood it won.

We arrived just after 6pm and there were 5 tables in the main room taken, promptly seated and our beverage orders brought out. Not sure how big the portions were I ended ordering the katsudon and sake nigeri.

Salad was brought out shortly and this had to be the best 'sushi house' style salad I've had in recent times. They were also giving with the dressing so every piece had a bit.

Miso soup was next and the flavor was classic, there is also quite a bit of seaweed and cube tofu at the bottom. more then I am used to, or prefer.

Next came the Sake nigeri (~$5), served as a pair, the salmon was extremely fresh and a good sized cut. the rice under was a neat small bun and did not fall apart when handled. I'm really glad we decided to go to Tomisushi now, and wish I skipped the Katsudon as I wanted more sushi.

Katsudon (~$10) - the bowl this came in was HUGE, and the portions weren't lacking either. Usually this is 3/4 rice and tonkatsu and 1 stirred egg, Tomisushi's version was maybe 1/2 rice, a pounded thinner tonkatsu (which i prefer) with maybe 2 eggs stirred in. layered with translucent onion slices and topped with chopped dried seaweed and 3 daikon pickle chips. My only complaint was the cut of pork they used was a bit on the fatty side, there were fat pockets and stuff i couldn't chew through. Other then that the texture, taste, everything else was spot on for me.

Although the food is very good, and prepared just the way I like it I think there are better 'bang for the buck' comparable restaurants. One of those being Hotaru further up in San Mateo. For $20 this was a expensive for what I ordered given the quality and location.

8/10

Tonkatsu & California Rolls

Delicious, large portions, VERY authentic Japanese restaurant, 95% Asian clientele. Two waitresses were very friendly, one was somewhat hostile. Two out of threee's not bad.

Sashimi + Tonkatsu Combination Dinner

Sashimi to die for, both the salmon and tuna melt in your mouth! Whoever said the tonkatsu is dry was right though, avoid it. They give you free green tea ice cream with dinner which is nice :)
