Terry was jonzing for Hong Kong style meal, and seeing that I was 8 million reviews behind, we figured why not do a return visit to Top Cafe? It's close to work, cheap, and they offered Terry's baked seafood over rice. I've been to Top Cafe in Milpitas and enjoyed it very much. I don't think you can lose with anything over rice. For ~$6 a plate, there's little room to complain.

I swore to myself I wouldn't order pork chops and ordered the popular curry beef and rice. 10 minutes into the visit, the food's ready. For $6.25, it's a lot of food, served hot, and it's frickin good. Look at the size of that plate!! Scoops of rice was fluffy. Take a couple of spoonfuls of curry mix and dump it on the rice.

The curry is somewhat creamy and not too spicy. It's mixed with ripe green bell peppers, chopped onions, potatoes, carrots and sliced beef. The beef is ridiculously tender and since it's buried in yellow curry, you can't tell what's going on. Either they pound the sh*t out of it or they are using fatty low grade meat. Just keep telling yourself, it's only $6.

For the price, Top Cafe is a tough deal to beat. There food taste great and service is fast. Now if you don't speak Chinese, you probably won't get personable service. I tried ordering Salt & Pepper fish as an appetizer but he didn't understand what I was asking for. Funny thing is, that was my favorite dish at the Milpitas location.

I gotta ding them on 1 thing. Terry noticed what appeared to be a fly zapper under the tv. About 2 feet away from the zapper are empty glasses for water, pitcher of water, and soda fountain. Isn't that a health violation?

Jason was busy today, and I had to do a quick lunch, so Agent Eddie and I headed to Top Cafe for a quick review. We had recently enjoyed the Milpitas location near McCarthy Ranch, so gave the San Jose location a try. The place looked to be quite a bit larger than the other one, but the menus looked similar. I would even say the food is the same, but Eddie claims the fried fish here isn't as good as the Milpitas one we visited. I ordered my usual Baked Seafood over Rice and was impressed with the dish, it tasted identical to the other location. The service here was quite a bit slower (even though there were only a few others in the restaurant at the time) and the place didn't feel as intimate. Its almost like you are eating in a warehouse compared to the hustle and bustle feel of the other one. Since this one is much closer to my work, though, I will probably visit this one more often and will update my review when I try the fried fish.
