Wow...Fuji Sukiyaki was an excellent dining experience. With bargain prices and hefty portions, you cant go wrong with this place. Located about a block away from the busy downtown district of San Mateo, this corner sushi restaurant has plenty of parking and fresh fish to attract loyal customers.

I was taking my parents out to dinner so trying a new restaurant was a bit risky for me. I could have taken them to Hotaru or Kyoto but Ive heard Fuji Sukiyaki was good.

First thing my parents noticed were the tempura boats with teriyaki chicken, they ended up ordering 2 of those. For me, I ordered CA roll, hamachi, tuna, and shrimp tempura. I was able to try a couple of things on the boat, tempura was awesome...light flaky batter, breaded shrimp was perfect...was not overcooked, teriyaki chicken was flavorful, Fuji Sukiyaki could do no wrong at this point.

CA Roll - they dont skimp out on the crab...they load up on this stuff. I thought Hotaru had the best California rolls. Fuji is my new CA King.

Maguro Maki - good..I should have gotten Nigiri for the full effect

Negihama Maki - hamachi, tobiko, green onion very nicely down...once again should have gotten Nigiri.

Shrimp Tempura - heavy on the avocado but the tempura was warm...interesting sensation in your mouth when you mix the two.

Wasabe - yikes, they caught me off guard. I was teary eyed on my first dip.

I like fuji Sukiyaki a LOT. Presentation of the rolls is pleasing to the eye, none of my rolls fell apart, adjacent ingrediants added a nice contrast to the sushi, the texture of eat piece was heaven to my mouth, portions are big, prices arent too expensive, and last but not least, fish had absolutely no fishy smelltaste to it...it was clean. Be sure to add Fuji Sukiyaki on your list of sushi places to try.

RETURN VISIT for Jason! 8/29/2004 - 8.5 Rating: I was so excited to come back to Fuji Sukiyake. I had such a good time on my last visit, it only took 2 weeks to come back. So why the lower score...probably my fault, I got the food to go...big mistake, eat it there. The Chicken Kana Age (crispy chicken) was soggy and nowhere near crispy. I cant blame Fuji..thats just what happens to fried food when you left it sit for 20 mins. Hamachi Nigiri and hand roll was very good. Im sure the next time I go back and eat there, the score will go back to 9.

I always open to try a Japanese restaurant especially one that comes highly recommended. I am happy to say that this one is a real jewel. Good price, good food and good services - what more can you ask for?

Ebi Kushiyake, Prawn tempura, tempura boat, and a rainbow row. The ebi kushiyake was an interesting appetizer, nicely done and the cucumber added a refreshing flavor to it. Prawn tempura was also good, battered just right and hot out of the pan. The boat basically consisted all the good stuff - tempura shrimps, ebi kushiyake, chicken teriyaki, CA roll, salad and some other stuff. I was actually full, but I felt I need to try the rainbow roll, so I ordered it anyway. The fish on the rainbow roll was pretty fresh but the cutting was a bit sloppy, just a bit but I ain't complaining. I must also added, it was an extremely hot day and I must had 3~4 cups of ice water. The waitress would come get me water everytime my cup was nearly empty. We almost couldn't finish the food and all this for $50 - that's with 20% tip. Like I said, good food, good services and good price. Can't go wrong with Fuji Sukiyaki.

Fuji Sukiyaki is a place that has been place that friends have been telling us about for the past 4 years. The main reason that we haven't hit this place till now has been the parking situation. Basically there is a couple spots in the front. So we went with take out.

On to the food. We got a San Mateo roll (tempura shrimp), California roll, Hawaiian roll (tuna avocado), and a Football roll. All were decent rolls but I didn't care for the amount of sesame seeds that they put on the outside of them. I kinda took away from the taste. The San Mateo roll was the best out of the bunch, good amount of shrimp in them. Also the wasabi was nice and hot as well.

My wife would have given this place a low scorer than I did cuz their version of Hotaru's Dragonroll (the Football roll) didn't come close to stacking up. I still enjoyed it though. 8 stars.

I frequent this Sushi bar!It is Delicious, Clean and has a variety of sushi hand rolls. My Recommendation: The Dragon Roll. They also have very good portions for the terriaky and tempura combinations. Very Clean and Outstanding Customer Service.
