Kyoto is located off 2nd avenue in the dense restaurant district of San Mateo, it can be quite a chore in picking the right one. If it wasnt for Sushi Sams and Fuji Sukiyaki being closed on Mondays, we would have nevered made it to Kyoto. Im extremely pleased the other places were closed because the sushi was awesome tonight!

Here's the sushi list for tonight

Hamachi - My favorite..so damm good we ordered 2 sets. The 2nd one was even better than the 1st one, deeper red and melts in your mouth....pure addiction...10

California Roll - Average...dont flame me for this, but I tend to like the crab mixed with a tiny bit of mayo. The California roll had no sparks...7

Tempura Roll - Average...nothing groundbreaking here, nice mix of veggies and shrimp, had some sesames on outside for flavoring....7

Spider Roll - Above average...cant compare it to Hotaru Spider roll but can hold its own. The good thing about this roll was they were bite size...8

Smoked Salmon Roll - Never had this before but would order again in a heartbeat. Almost like a California roll but substitue the crab for smoked Salmon....9

Maguro - omg...I rarely order this since its hit and miss with me. Tonight was the exception...melts in your mouth like the hamachi....9.5

Service was bad, took forever for the waitress to get our order, we had to ask them to order more sushi, when we finished for sushi we had to ask for our check, they watched us put our ATM card in the bill they still didnt pick it up...bad night for them indeed.

The only reason we tolerated their bad service was because of the fresh tasting sushi. Prices were about average with our bill coming out to $58 (including $8 tip and $12 of beer) This is one of the better sushi places I've been to. Kyoto deserves a well earned 9.

I had no idea if Kyoto was going to be good or bad. So here we go..

We got seated really fast. We grabbed the sushi list and ordered hamachi, maguro, California roll, shrimp tempura roll, smoke salmon roll, and a spider roll. All were very good, but I wasnt to keen on the cal roll. The maguro and hamachi rate a 10 in my book. The spider rolls could have been bigger too.

I enjoyed my sushi with a tall Karin beer which was perfect. And also the wasabi here brought tears to my eyes a couple times.

The draw back to this place was the service. It was bad. We had to ask for our check even though the waitress saw us finish. Then we had to take the check to them to pay. They could improve there.

But when it comes down to it the sushi speaks for itself. Kyotos gets a solid 9 stars.

Wow.. I've driven by so many times and eatin at almost every sushi place down town San mateo, who would og guessed the one i ignored was so good. Fish melted in my mouth, up to par if not better then Hotaru. Service was lacking, food made up for it

Re-review please

They changed owners some time ago. I don't think the sushi is 9 rated anymore.

Everything

I've been here numerous times. Really the only sushi bar I will go to in San Mateo. Tried a bunch of the other ones and they just don't compare. If you get into Kyoto's specialty rolls, they will rock your world. Kyoto is actually a Korean BBQ house.
