If you drive on the 101 South near San Mateo, you probably have caught a glimpse of Ma Pinkies BarBQ and Soul Food restaurant near 3rd Avenue. Ive always wondered what they tasted like and today was the day to find out. If you are not familiar with San Mateo, Ma Pinkies might be a little tough to find, just use the Map Quest link at the top of this review.

We ordered a lot of food which gave us an opportunity to sample various dishes.

Collard greens - a bit bitter and having a smokey flavor to it (they cook it with smoked turkey)

Cornbread muffins - nothing special, tastes like the stuff you can make at home

Beans and Rice - just ok, no extra spices added. A little bland but with some Tabasco sauce love, the dish becomes more appetizing

Slab Pork Ribs - great stuff, sauce not to sweet, just right for my liking. Meat was very tender but not enough to fall of the bone.

Fried Chicken - good, just like some of the stuff my dad can make at home. Batter wasnt heavy and not too greasy. If I had to guess what type of batter they use, I would think its just flour and corn meal?

The food at Ma Pinkies Bar-B-Q and Soul food is good but the thing that really stands out for me was the friendly hospitality. The people behind the counter are super nice and I would have no problems making a return visit. For my next visit, Im going to have to try the Red Snapper and Prawns.

I would recommend ordering your food about 10 minutes before you get there. Fried chicken takes about 10-15 minutes to cook, I dont have a problem with that, it only means my chicken is going to be fresher than other places that normally have them heated under a lamp.

Spider ate...

Is this place still around?

Drove over there today and couldn't find the restaurant at ALL. Found the little complex where the restaurant is supposed to be, but the sign was down and it was totally empty. :(
