When I lived in San Francisco, I used to visit North Beach Pizza on Haight street. Ive been out of the city for a couple of years now and havent been since. They have a restaurant in San Mateo and figured Id go relive North Beach Pizza experience. I noticed the lunch special for under $4 from 11AM-4PM.

I went with the pepperoni and waited a short 10 minutes for the pizza. If you've ever eaten inside the San Mateo location it also doubles for an oven. That place is soooo hot, its no wonder they have all the windows open with fans blowing everywhere. I couldnt help but notice all the awards this place has won for their pizza. Was it that good?

crust - decent stuff, fully cooked, no raw dough present. I would recommend eating the pizza at the restaurant since delivery will yeild soggy slices.

sauce - good stuff, nothing exotic about it, better tasting than any chain pizza restaurant (well, except for round table, I like their sauce)

cheese - this is where the men are separated from the boys. North Beach Pizza piles on the cheese like no other. They must have grated 1/2 pound of cheese on my pizza. For cheese lovers, you gonna love this place.

The odd thing about the toppings is its buried under the cheese. Since I like my pepperoni crunchy, it wasnt going to happen here. They layer the entire pizza with pepperonis so every bite gets pepperoni.

North Beach Pizza still holds strong with their cheesy pizzas and lunch specials. For $4, its a good bang for your buck. I was completely stuffed with the special and had leftovers. Dont expect gourmet style, new york slice, chicago deep, or california, its the neighborhood pizza joint that every city should have.

I love North Beach pizza. The pizzas taste wonderfully fresh and light. Since I started taking my family there I've grown to really enjoy the warmth of the ovens and the friendliness of the staff. The pizzas are pretty large and the place is very busy. It is very clean. Unfortunately, I hate waiting on the street for a table so try to go at off hours. The pasta plates are very large, so order for 2 people. Not a good place for parties over 4 since the tables are not too big.

Foodvacuum ate...

Spaghetti with meat sauce

Sauce was even better than before, although a little runney when mushrooms are added. Too much carrots in the salad and not enough lettuce.
