Part of me wanted to try the famous Habanero burger but the other half won out on the small order of fish and chips. Im not much of a bar go-er anymore but this is the type of bar I like. They have everything....music, great selection of beers, hard alcohol, darts, video games, outdoor patio, beer club, and a bartender with a witty attitude. She will bust your balls and its all taken with good fun. The bar is a real bar and unpretentious so all you suits can keep driving and go to your martini bars. I dont know if Im losing my memory or anything but I dont recall the food menu having this many items to select from. I normally get the fish and chips but I would recommend also trying the burgers or bangers and mash. Since I was drinking beer I thought the small order of fish and chips would be enough batter - crunchy and oily, let it sit for a while as these suckers are blazing hot out of the fryer. It was almost on the burnt side but the batter was undercooked in 1 section (picture #5). I know Im sounding picky but the batter was good stuff. fish - large slabs of fish, nice cuts, and bright white color. For a small order, this is plenty for any adult. fries - these are cut fairly thick, definitely chips in my book. secret sauce - something like chipotle with ketchup and some other ingrediants that Im forgetting. Give it a try. Overall, I think the food is a 8.5 but the bar rates in around a 9. I think alot of people go there just for the food and like I said before, its not one of those obnoxious sports bar, its the real deal. You can tell the people inside are locals and have been frequenting this place for years. Prince of Wales Pub is a definite stop for anybody in the area of San Mateo.

Iconic bar put out of business

“After 32 years of great food and beer the Prince of Wales is closed. A new guy bought the building and gave the owner 30 days notice to leave, so he could open his own bar. I won't be giving this new guy my business. ”
