My long anticipated sushi review for San Mateo. Ive been wanting to go here for such a long time but didnt want to waste my time in line. It was raining, we had 2 hours to kill before a plane flight, so what the heck. We got there and it was busy but luckily we were able to score a table within 5 minutes. Looks like they have expanded a bit since the last time I walked by. Being busy is a good sign and having it filled with Asian people is even better.

We sat down and within 2 minutes tea was dropped off and 2 minutes later, they asked for our order. I am not kidding but we ordered a boatload of food and they brought it out in 5 minutes!!! We were skeptical because how the hell could they make our food that fast...theres just no way???

I wont list everything we ordered just the notables

Chicken Karaage - crispy and juicy, would order it again but they didnt deliver our steamed rice

CA roll - heavy on the mayo and built for a sumo wrestler. These are out of control, they were ok and does not compare to other sushi restaurants in San Mateo

Maguro - cut just right and texture was awesome. Broke apart in my mouth and was very fresh. Good job!

Hamachi - thin cut, texture was excellent, this was a grade above the stuff I usually get, I love it.

Sake - Salmon is something I have been ordering lately, it was ok tonight, nothing spectacular but definitely worth tasting again

Unagi - excellent, some of the best stuff Ive had

Well, I guess it lived up to the hype, Sushi Sams was a hit with me and my out of town friends. We all agreed the prices were right, fish was fresh, and service was lightning fast. What more can you ask for? Sushi Sams is one of my new favorite sushi places in San Mateo.

My friends took me here for my birthday. Yes, this review is two months late but it’s been in the works for a while. Anyways, finding parking in downtown San Mateo is like trying to find a penny on the sidewalk in the dark. We were fortunate to only have to drive around for like 15 minutes before finding parking and then having to walk 4 blocks to Sushi Sam’s. We got here well before 6pm to beat the crowd and by the time we left around 7:30 there was a huge wait list.

Since my friends were treating and they wanted to order the Chef’s Choice Sushi for themselves, I tagged along and ordered the same but without the wasabi. The price is not listed on the menu for a reason…it’s not cheap either. I can’t name every single piece of sushi I had but my friends kept ordering more rounds as we were all still hungry and eventually it seemed like the chef was running out of ideas or fish to offer. By then we called it quits and ordered some appetizers instead.

Not sure how much the final bill was but I know it’s in the upper 3 figures area. Everything here looks good, the fish were all fresh, and price was decent. Definitely one of the best sushi places I’ve been to. I think service for the Chef’s choice could be a bit faster as there was more anticipation in between each course.
