My friends Shana and Michael have been telling me about Thai Satay for years. I dont know why it took me this long to try it but Im glad I did. Located in downtown San Mateo across from Draegers, this cozy thai restaurant has got all the makings of a nice dining experience; from the carved wooden statues, unique seat covers, dimmed lighting, and attentive staff. Its hard to go wrong with an elegant atmosphere.

GB was in town and thought it would be fun to catch up with some good thai. We ordered 2 chicken dishes, shrimp satay, and a Thai Ice tea. I cant remember the names of the dishes since I dont have the menus in front of me but they were the chef specials, one had pineapples and the other one had crushed red pepper? I know Im vague and not doing justice to Thai Satay for describing it in more detail, not too heavy on the fish sauce, light coconut milk, fresh ginger, and whatever other special treats on the plates. The most important thing is both dishes were excellent.

Shrimp Satays were cooked perfectly and had a glimmering marinade on it. Simply too good to be true, just give me 3 orders of these appetizers with a side of white rice and you will see me napping on the floor with a smile. Do yourself a favor and order the Shrimp Satay.

What else is there to say except for Thai Satay is a wonderful place to enjoy a meal. They have takeout so if you are too lazy to sit through dinner, order out and savor a flavorful chow down.

I was pleasantly surprised by this place. It was a very chilly night when we went and it was warm and cozy and comfortably lit when we arrived for a late dinner. The staff was so attentive (constantly refilling our water) and friendly.

We had the classic Thai soup with coconut milk and mushrooms and chicken breast and it was wonderfully flavored with a nice hint of lime juice. Then we had the Chicken Ginger dish and the sauce was amazing! It was so great with the steamed white rice. And we also had the basil Eggplant w/Pork dish and that was phenominal too. The pork was perfectly cooked.

All in all, it's no Krung Thai (which is my favorite South Bay Thai place) or Marnee Thai (the best SF Thai place) but it's a great standby in the Peninsula. Nice service, flavorful food, cozy atmosphere.

I really was not blown away with this place. Staff was attentive during dining (but it took them while to come take our order and the place wasn't very busy). However, the food was lacking compared to other places (Old Siam). For my party, I ordered four dishes:

Red Curry: Good portions and went well with the rice, but for some reason, I felt that the sauce was a bit too sweet. Almost syrupy if I had to describe it.

Sweet Basil Beef: My opinion may be biased because this tasted like something I could make at home.

Pad Thai: noodles were too thin for my liking and was doused in sauce which was also too sweet. My sister said the noodles were "mushy"

Papaya Salad: this salad did not have much kick to it, despite being doused in the lime and fish sauce concoction. The sourness was overpowering but bland at the same time. No depth.

I would say that this place is just okay. Just standard. If I were in the area and were in the mood for Thai, perhaps I'd go here.
