I was going to hitup wishlist request 'La Paloma' but noticed that it appeared to be a sitdown restaurant so figured I would wait until Jason returned to take that one down. So I immediately looked across the street and saw Don Don. Oh my gawd. This place was rundown. Looking at this place, I was thinking it might be a chain, but not a well-known-one. I was also thinking: this could be a health hazard. But then I saw the drive-thru and KNEW I had to pay a visit. I have to give this place a good half-a-point just for offering the drive-thru. Any place that serves halfway healthy food and has a drive-thru is great competition for McDonalds and the other bad-for-you fast food joints with drive-thrus. Sadly, however, McDonalds doesn't have much to worry about. I decided to go with the Large Hawaiian Shrimp plate. And just as I was about to pay, I saw the california rolls listed, and decided to tack those on as well. The total was just shy of 10 bucks. OUCH. But my food was in my hand in about a minute. I am not sure if I should be scared.
I decided to tackle the california rolls first. They were completely average. They included wasabe and soy sauce, thankfully, so that spiced it up a bit. I have had worse, to be fair, but this didn't blow me away. Your standard refrigerated sushi.
Next up was the shrimp plate. I opened the container and was surprised. I was not sure what this dish was supposed to be. Healthy? Sweet? A bit bed of rice on the bottom, then fresh crunchy vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, tomatoes, carrots), some shrimp, pineapple chunks, covered with teriyaki sauce.
An odd combination that tasted just as odd. The shrimp were flaccid stale things that I regret eating right now. The teriyaki sauce was WAY sweet, which didn't complement the carrots, tomatoes, and cabbage under it very well. The vegetables were fresh and tasty however. The pineapple also was sweet and tasty. Overall, most of the ingredients were good on their own, but mixed together it was another story.
I am not sure that I would return. It was quite an experience to be sure, but I think it just wasn't my idea of a good quick lunch. There are cheaper, and almost as fast, alternatives. I still give them credit for the drive-thru though.
