El Camaron Loco is an eyesore and which was screaming for jatbar, eat over here. Having lived in San Diego for 4 years, this loud paint scheme was reminiscent of the ones you'd see all over SD. I had dreams of california burritos, rolled tacos, carne asada fries but those dreams were quickly shattered upon reading the menu. They did have one thing going for them, they were offering some Salvadorian dishes.

Instead of ordering a burrito, I went with the 3 taco bistec plate. If you arent famiiar with bistec, its just grilled steak...aka carne asada. The meat was cut thin and had a bit of gristle to it. Fat trimings dont bother me too much, a little flavor never hurt anyone :) The tacos are about the size of the ones you get at taco trucks and layered with 2 small corn tortillas, meat, onions, cilantro, and hot sauce. If I were to get these tacos off a taco truck, they would rate about average.

I usually get full off of 1/2 a burrito so I figured 3 tacos would do the job. Heck no, I was starving afterwards. For $5.50, Im a believer I didnt get my money's worth. If they want to give me the value plate, at least throw rice and beans with the plate and I'll keep my mouth shut. Tacos of these size should command about $1.25 each. They were baby tacos...

The highlight of the lunch was the brightly painted colors, wide array of hot sauces, and the tacky mirrors that resembled the strips clubs Ive 'heard' about in the San Diego area, cough cough. If you want to get full on tacos, I cannot suggest going to El Camaron Loco. I wont say that I wouldnt return but its definitely not at the top of my list.

El Camaron Loco wasn't our first stop. We had planned on hitting up a cuban restaurant but unfortunately it was closed on Monday. So we headed down to the Alameda and happened upon this great yellow building. Very hard to miss so we figured it would be a great place to review.

The place was pretty empty at this early lunch hour and since it was brand new, we had fairly low hopes of it being too happening. We gave it a try anyway. The TV was just as loud as the color scheme. The inside was covered in mirrors and was quite unique in its own right. I can imagine this place becoming popular with the nearby Santa Clara University crowd. Nice college hangout type of place.

I went with the Veggie burrito. At $3.50 it seemed like a great deal. I was a bit worried it might be too small.

It arrived shortly and I was pleasantly surprised. It was a good size and it was pre-split which made for a good jatbar photo opportunity. The rice looked unique and the rest looked pretty tasty on first examination.

I immediately started into it. And it immediately started falling apart in my hands. Ideally it should have been wrapped in foil to keep it together for those that like to eat burritos in their hands. But everything was made up for with the flavor.

This was full flavored. The rice was actually tasty, especially when mixed with the guacamole, sour cream, vegetables, etc. The grilled tortilla finished it off nicely. For $3.50 this was an amazing burrito. Tasted great and filled me up. I needed nothing else. On the table was supplied 5 hot sauces. I enjoyed the variety of these sauces, though it wasn't as good as having a nice custom salsa included.

I would not hesitate to return to El Camaron Loco to try these great burritos. Being Salvadorian, just like La bamba, it leads me to think that its hard to go wrong with a Salvadorian restaurant. If you are driving by and see the bright yellow building, stop by - you will not be disappointed.

Be sure to bring cash.
