Todays lunch was suppose to be a taco truck experience but we couldnt find it! We were limited on time, so we started to head back. While driving on El Camino Real, we noticed the big sign Filfela. I had my heart set on a burger or burrito but meditteranean is hard to come by. We pulled into the parking lot and walked into a smokey restaurant. They need some ventilation in here.

I ordered the Shawirma special with fries and drink for $9. I hate to be a jerk but I gotta tell give my honest opinion. The Shawirma plate is something I would never order again. I couldnt believe the flavor on this sucker...it tasted like the ground beef from T*co B*ll. Holy crap..if I wanted to taste mexican seasoning, I would have gone to the border. Not only was I disappointed with the mexican flavored meat, lack of tomatos, but it was layered in bitter yellow lettuce. Even the pita was weak, you can buy this at Trader J*es.

Its probably my ignorance on why this food doesnt agree with me..maybe it has to do with the food being Gluten Free. Either way...I didnt like it. So youre asking why the 6? I had a snippet of the Kofta Kabab, that was good. Other than that, if youre into Gluten Free food, Filfela might be your hall of famer.

We found Filfela on a drive-by and thought it looked interesting enough to try. The place was very smokey inside (ie: you can SEE the smoke if you stood on one side of the restaurant and looked to the opposite wall!). Anyway, the menu looked enticing so I went for the Vegetarian combination. At about $9, it was steep, but this is not unusual for middle eastern food (for whatever reason!). The order took awhile to make (about 15 minutes) and when it did arrive I was fairly pleased. I got 2 Pitas, and all of the items you see in picture #7. The falafel balls were smaller than I was used to, but in a good way. They were easier to munch in one bite and made great finger foods. :) I liked them a lot. The hummus was a bit runny for my taste and flavored a bit bland (more lemon!) but went well with the somewhat tasteless pitas. The eggplant was a nice semi-sweet recipe that appealed to me. The lettuce was a bit boring. Would I return? Sure, but not for awhile. The bang for the buck was low here for me. Maybe I'd try a falafel sandwich next time.

Filfela was today’s lunch choice. We needed to grab some food relatively quick and get back to work. So I pulled off El Camino and headed in. I order the Kofta Kabob Sandwich sat down and waited and waited…. and finally 20 minutes later I got my order. I took the thing to go and ate it in the car on my way back.

The pita was average the lettuce was that yellow white iceberg stuff, and not enough tomatoes. So far not so good, but the meat in this thing saved it. Good beef and lamb ratio spiced well with hints of cumin I think. I also liked that tangy tahini sauce. This place has the potential to be better. I’ll have to go back and order something else when I have more time to sit down and enjoy my meal. 7.0
