The only reason we stopped at this place was our co-worker Mark. He is completely obsessed with the word 'Freedom' that we had to perform Operation Burrito Justice. Before storming in, Terry had pointed out the words on the door, Health Mex. Crap, 2 words that dont belong in my mexican dictionary. I usually have the worst luck with those healthier mexican places.
Putting Freedom Burrito health mex to the ultimate test, I wondered how they would make fried pork healthier? I ordered the carnitas taco topped off with celantro and onions. Within a short wait, it was delivered. It sure didnt look healthy.
Tortilla - corn tortilla, good
carnitas - oil heaven. The oil was everywhere, it was leaking between the tortillas? How the heck does that happen from the time it gets made in the kitchen to my table? Doesnt it have to soak through the tortilla before that can happen. I dont remember the last time Ive seen this much oil on a taco. Believe me, I KNOW carnitas has fat, oil, whatever but this taco should have been drained before served. Whats even more gross is I ate the whole thing. I would have to pass on ordering this taco again.
The interior is vibrant and makes you feel happy inside...when I saw the dancing cacti mural on the wall, I had to smile. Freedom Burrito offers a big menu but it looks like I struck out with their carnitas taco.

Freedom burrito was a driveby and we went into it with no recommendation or wishlist request and no prior knowledge. Just that the name was cool.
The doors had 'Health Mex' etched on them so immediately I had some doubts. But I still had an open mind. Since I wasn't too hungry, I decided to go for a Bean and Cheese burrito - not my benchmark Super Veggie. I just wanted a taste without getting overly full.
Upon quick perusal of the menu we noticed that they offer Carne Asada Fries here. For you San Diego folks living in the Bay Area, you will probably be very excited to hear this. There's no way I'm going to try this, but I (as well as many others) welcome comments on this on the jatboard.
The burrito however was not very inspiring. How inspiring can a bean and cheese burrito be though. The tortilla was fairly bland tasting, straight outta the store. The cheese was kind of skimpy (I'll write that off to Health Mex) but the beans were pretty tasty, a refried type that wasn't too greasy. I look forward to the Super Veggie burrito, but with their health slant, it may not be what I am looking for in my burrito. And if I am going to be buying a bean burrito, I think I would prefer a Taco Bell burrito for 60 cents compared to the overpriced one here at $2.60. I will probably return though to give it a proper burrito update.

Came to this place by accident. We were headed somewhere else, but got 'lost' and drove past our destination, then figured, why not try this place....
i ordered a regular carnitas burrito and two tacos al pastor.....
the menu seemed large and had some cool stuff. like barbacoa, which i didn't see till after i had ordered (barbacoa tacos rule).
the place was empty on a saturday evening. the coffes shop next door was packed with coffee shop types. probably the most discouraging thing was the emtiness of the place. shouldn't good restaraunts have patrons on saturday night?
but, the food was good. nothing special on the tacos: a little dry and a little small, but good flavor. and the burrito was pretty good (without rice). the carnitas were oily and flavorful. kind of like it was lubed with flavor oil for more easy absorbtion into the stomach...it was pretty good. as for the claims of being heatlth mex, i didn't really get that vibe, as the dishes i ate and my friend had and the menu all looked like pretty standard taqueria stuff. this is not that far from my hood, where there exists a rare sillicon valley taco void (cupertino).
nothing really stood out here, which is good, i suppose. decent food. cheap. no lines on saturday night....i might go back, but then again, i'd probably just head toward el camino real and go to garcias if i really wanted tacos.

Freedom Burrito (visit on 1-14-06)
I had been here before, shopping in the area after work, before xmas. I thought Id give them another shot. I ordered my standard: a carne asada burrito.
The place is bright and colorful inside and that puts you in a good festive mood. Clean and tidy, always a nice sign the owners care. Place was fairly dead and yet my order took nearly 15 minutes. That seemed a little off, but alas my foil wrapped mini presto log arrived. I jumped in the car, turned on some tunes and begun unwrapping with pen and paper nearby.
The size was decent for a super, but I was disappointed. They added grilled green bell peppers, again YUCK! Do note that Im not at all a picky eater! They really do need to call this a fajita burrito. What a cruel fate, I was in the zone for a good burrito. Picking out the bell peppers was impossible among the other ingredients and therefore, I didnt finish it. If these had been red bell peppers, I would have been satisfied, green bells however, tend to overpower everything in the vicinity. This is what happened last visit too.
The meat was tender, diced a bit small but flavorful, good displacement of cheese and sour cream, but the bell pepper experience ruined this for me Buyer beware! I would only return if someone else was buying, and then I would be ordering something else off the menu.

I wanted mexican all week and we needed to go to Bed Bath & Beyond anyways, we figured there was a taqueria type place in the plaza and Freedom Burrito it was. I was at first sketchy about the name, who would name a taqueria 'freedom' ?! Anyways...hunger presisted and eventually won, we entered and ordered the following:
1 super burrito 1 chimichanga lunch platter chips and salsa are free - salsa had kick, and chips were ok.
my friend told me the super burrito, although mammoth, was not as filling as it looked. i can't comment further on this.
the chimichanga on the other hand was boring, carnitas wrapped in a tortilla and deep fried. it tasted dry and almost unflavorful i had to drizzle whatever was in the red bottles on the table all over it to finish. the lunch platter also included refried beans w/shredded cheese, mexican rice and a mix of lettuce guac and sour cream - these items tasted as like what they should taste like, nothing special.
the decor of the place is lively except for the dust on the ceiling fans. pretty disgusting.
i'd go back if i was in the area and really, really hungry. otherwise i'd recommend burrito factory up on homestead/hollenbeck.
