Thanks to Jen S. for submitting House of Soul Food. This place is kinda off the beaten path and situated near some auto mechanic shops. I probably would have never have found this spot by myself. Its defintely a word of mouth type place or just read about it on jatbar :)

If for some reason you cannot find House of Soul Food, follow the trail of bbq smoke, you can smell it for blocks. There's some parking in the front and the rear of the lot. We walked inside and it looks like we missed the lunch rush tornado...wow this place was hit hard. All the tables were dirty and people occupied all the tables in the place. This place is a busy spot and for people who are pressed for time, call in the order since it takes 10-15 mins to cook up.

With a big red menu near the register, you can choose from the many items. They were out of red snapper today which means we will have to make a return visit to give for that and the bbq ribs a try. Since I only have 1 stomach, I ordered the fried chicken, red beans and rice, and cornbread. Im a big fan of fried chicken and always willing to drive miles and miles to give it a try.

red beans and rice - decent stuff, had a mix of mild spices and sausages. Rice is at the bottom with the red beans atop. I would order it again.

cornbread - kinda dry and too bad they dont have real corn in the bread. Im a sucker for that kind of stuff. Add some honey and you are good to go.

fried chicken - I have mixed feelings on this. The meal cost $6.95 for 3 pieces; 2 drumsticks and a thigh. I wonder if I could substitute for 2 wings and a breast. Anyways, I bit into the chicken and something didnt taste right. The chicken either was badly freezer burned or chicken was refried twice. It was so gross that I couldnt take another bite. Seeing that I had 2 other pieces, I took another small bite and the other drumstick and thigh were fine. Must have been a bad leg and should have returned returned it. These things happen but luckily House of Soul Food was able to recover. The batter is simple and crunchy. No exotic spices to ruin the taste of fried chicken. The cooking oil could have been changed but I guess when you hit after the lunch rush, there's no time to do those sorts of things. I would consider ordering again to try the wings.

Other than my mishap with the 1 drumstick, I was happy eating the rest of my food. Prices are a little expensive but this type of food is hard to come by. Would I come back? Sure, I need to try the red snapper and bbq ribs. I also tried one of the hush puppies and those reminded me of some of the stuff I had in New Orleans.

House of Soul Food was a request we were eager to fulfill. We arrive and the place is definitely good size and has a large enough menu. Lots of specials and also discounts for seniors on Tuesdays. The place reminded me a lot of Jonathons from the menu, but thankfully the place was a bit bigger than Jonathons and not as overrun with smoke. I could leave this place and not take the smell with me.

I tried to get the snapper, but alas they were out today. I instead opted for the Catfish. My first taste of the fish. To accompany it, I had some hushpuppies.

We were arriving at the end of the lunch hour so the place wasn't the cleanist at the time, but good enough for me. The food arrives quickly and I take it in. It looks very similar to Jonathons in appearance. Its a shame that they don't offer the shrimp like Jonathons does. I probably would have bumped it up another half point for that.

The catfish, however, is pretty darn good. The seasoning is almost identical to Jonathons so I eat it quickly. The tartar sauce they supplied was nowhere near as good as Jonathons unfortunately. The hot sauce on the table was the same as what you get at Jonathons (I love this stuff!). I quickly ate the catfish. No complaints at all.

The hushpuppies were flavorful, but I am not sure I would order them again. I would have much preferred some shrimp so I had a hard time really getting into these. Jason ordered the cornbread and I tried this. It was a bit dry (the honey helped) but I ate it just fine. Would be something the kids would really like I think. Very sweet.

If I was in the area, I would definitely return. As it is, Jonathons is a bit closer to my work and those shrimp are very hard to beat. I do hope to return sometime and try the snapper.
