Hot dogs and burgers, whatever you do, do not take pictures inside

With 100s upon 100s of restaurants reviewed on jatbar, we have been fortunate to have great luck with restaurant owners and customers. We have never encountered a problem in our journey of 865 restaurants. With a streak this long, I guess we were bound for a bump in the road.

Hungry Hound is special delivery by way of ne00, one of our oldest agents. His restaurant picks are solid as he's one of our toughest critics and loves finding the cheap meals. ne00 had written Hungry Hound as an easy 8 with burgers, sandwiches, and hot dogs being the real winners.

Terry was running an errand at Fry's so I planned a lunch with my co-worker Chris. Hungry Hound is an easy place to find as it's across from Santa Clara University on Lafayette. We parked on the street and usual, I take my outside shot. Before we entered, I asked Chris to order 1st so I can take shots near the counter. I spotted a good picture and snapped the shot of their wall menu.

Flash.

Crap, I can't believe that just happened. I forgot to turn off the flash and the light bounced off everything. The cook/owner turns around and asking his co-workers,

"Did someone take a picture?"
"Why did they take a picture?"
"They can't take pictures here!"

The cook/owner turns his body away from us like he's hiding his face, he's visibly upset.

Oh great, the sh*t is gonna hit the fan when I get to the counter. As they talked in the kitchen, we're standing waiting and finally the lady took Chris's order. When I got to the counter, she asked me,

"Did you take a picture?"

I said "Yes, I took a picture of your menu, do you guys have menus to go?" I placed an order for bacon cheeseburger, fries, and soda. She goes back to the kitchen and talks to the cook/owner and he approaches me.

"What did you take a picture of?"
"You can't take pictures here!"
"Give me your camera!"

"I took a picture of your menu. I will delete the picture and I'm not going to give you my camera." His face is turning red, he has went from upset to super pissed off. I thought he was going to hit me.

"Call the cops!!"

What!! Is this guy for real?

I say, "Look, here are the pictures I took!"

Camera in hand, I show the 1st shot from outside and 2nd shot is the wall menu with nobody in the picture. He flips out and yells..

"Call 911!!!!"
"Call 911!!!!"

I'm not sure how the customers are reacting but Chris tells me people had the look like we were robbing the place. Yelling 911 is serious and my heart is starting to beat faster, hands are shaking, and adrenalin pumping.

"You can't take pictures here!!"

I show him the 2nd picture of the wall menu and delete it from my camera. He tells me to delete the 1st picture and I tell him no. He says, you can't take pictures of my restaurant. I tell him, I'm on a public street, I can take pictures as I please, I own it and not going to delete it.

"Call the police, call 911!!!"
"Why do you take pictures of my place?"

I say, "I like to take pictures of food, places I eat."

"You can't do that!"

Alright, I don't want the food. Give me my money back. We walk out and everyone is staring at us like we committed the crime of the century.

I wanted to write this review right after it happened but felt sleeping on it would allow me to write a more toned down description. I DO NOT have permission to take any shots inside the restaurant. If they ask me to delete the photos, I will do so immediately. If they ask me not to take pictures, I will comply. End of story. I always try my best not to disturb any employees and customers. My 1000's of pictures speak for themselves and respect people's privacy; I blur people's faces, I try to take pictures when no one is looking, I never take pictures to openly demoralize a restaurant or person.

The problem is, even after I showed him the pictures with no one in it and after I deleted them, he continued to overreact and wanted the police involved. I'm convinced this guy is hiding something, I don't know what but it's very suspicious for someone to act out as he did.

I'm sure the food is as good as ne00 wrote but you'll never find me coming back here. I'm not going to tell you not to visit here because I never tried the food but a big part of dining is the service. This is absolutely without a doubt the worst service I have ever received in my entire restaurant reviewing experience. For that, I truly believe in administering an extra special score of an unprecedented rating of a '1'. We don't even rate down to 1 but Hungry Hound defies all boundaries. Here's to the cook/owner for earning jatbar's Asshole of the year award.

Our tech rehearsal before the day of the show was in May Theater at Santa Clara University. There was the usual Togo Sandwiches across the street that most people, including myself went to grab some sandwiches before a long night. I did not find out about Hungry Hound until I saw one of the tech crews eating his humungous sandwich with side of fries. Next day the day of the show, I decided to check out this place. Originally, I thought it would be a sandwich shop but turns out, they also serve up hot dogs and hamburgers.

Hungry Hound sells some cheap burgers and sandwiches. A decent size burger and sandwich runs around $5 or less with side of fries. I went with the mushroom Swiss burger and a hot pastrami sandwich. Total bill was around $11 with tax. Waited for about 10 minutes and received my order. I thought they would put in condiments but turned out the bag only had the food without napkins of forks or condiments.

The burger is about the diameter of an average pancake, well not that big but it was a lot flatter than most burgers. The meat was thin but juicy. Loved the soft bread, complimented the burger but did not overwhelm it. Some condiments would have been great as the grilled mushrooms were mostly peppery and did not seem to have any salt. The side of fries was horrible, bland and tasted like it has been sitting around under a heat lamp. Some ketchup would have probably kicked it up a notch.

The hot pastrami was a huge roll. This sandwich was too much for one person and enough for two to share. They piled on the meat, two slices of melted Swiss cheese and the bread, nothing else stood in between the pastrami and bread. The bread, like most rolls, was a bit too much. Definitely, worth the price and much more meat than what Togo offers.

I took most of my photos on my camera phone. I guess if you do not take any photos, which is most people on Jatbar, this place is worth trying out for the local secret.

Pros: Cheap, good burgers, burger joint atmosphere with the locals.

Cons: Street parking, tasteless fries, no photos inside.

Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Place was packed, food was average, many sandwiches seemed overpriced in the $10+ range. If I had it to do over again I would have gone to Togos a couple of doors down but they were wall-to-wall at the time.

Cheeseburger

My friend loves this place, but I never did get it. I think the food is average. On the other hand, the owners were generally very nice, so I wonder why they over reacted to the camera. Problems with the health department?

bad customer service

This is just awful, I would never give this establishment my business. I think Jatbar needs to have negative scores...

Cheeseburgers

The cheeseburgers are cooked over a flame grill. Good tasting burgers. After reading the review, I wont be coming back anytime soon.

I've eaten here a few times. The place is okay, but never again after the crap they pulled.
