With a huge lunch at China Stix, we convinced ourselves to followup with some dessert at the Portuguese Bakery. I walked though the doors and immediately my mouth started to water like a dog. The sweet smell of bread leads me to think of an ideal, having a car air refresher that smells like bread? idiotic? maybe? hahah..

I got these chocolate cookies and Malacadas. The cookies were great and whats even better were the ingrediant listing, stuff you can pick up at the market, no crazy chemicals. It wasnt too sweet either.

I didnt think it was possible to find a bakery item more greasier than a donut. Its called a Malacada, almost the texture like a crossant, flaky with a buttery flavor to it. It left oil marks on my fingers and coated my stomach with a slick film. I wonder if they deep fry these thing?

On the window, they claim to have the best sweet bread in the bay area. Well, I sampled some of their sweet bread and it was excellent. You can sample various breads when you walk in. Was it the best Ive had? I dont know but I do know I would buy a loaf of sweet bread on my next visit. Skip the tasteless bread you buy at the supermarket and go to Portuguese Bakery for some freshly baked goodies.

I must admit to having a soft spot for Malacadas. Ever since discovering that Portuguese bakery right outside Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii so many years ago, I've been hunting out Portuguese Bakerys just to get my Malacada fix. And of course, every once in awhile I'll bake up some Malacadas myself.

Well, its pretty safe to say, I went for the Malacadas immediately. They looked so good, and at 75 cents a good deal. I was little worried that they might have sold out of them by 1pm but they had a bunch and they didn't look like stale leftovers either. Good news.

After buying one, I went outside to the benches and stuffed myself. I found it to be VERY greasy, but I guess thats the whole point, eh? Malacadas are deep fried chunks of dough covered in sugar. I found it to be VERY delicious. Soft, sweet, and large.

I sampled their Portuguese sweet bread and found myself less than satisfied. It was OK, but not like my Great Grandmother used to make. It was a little less sweet, and a little thinner in consistency than what I grew up on. Still good good stuff though.

So my score might be a little high, but we're talking about Malacadas here.

I would really like to try one coming straight out of the kitchen as I'm sure it will be completely mind blowing. The only problem for me is its closeness to Stans Donuts. Decisions Decisions. . . .Eenie Meenie Miney Mo. . . .

I have been a loyal customer of The Portuguese Bakery for a long long time.... My mom is from the island of Sao Miguel and later in life, Lisbon - so authentic was the only way to go. I remember the pre-holiday trek out to the bakery as a kid, for San Jorge Cheese, Bread and Bacaleau (Salted dried cod fish -don't ask!) way before I could even see over the counter.

I grew up with the thin circles of crisp, slightly-sweet cookies called Biscoites (pronounced 'Bish-coit-tegsh' by my mom), Pop Sec bread (mini loves of a lovely white bread) and of course Portuguese Sweet Bread.

The bakery does an EXCELLENT job of all items, especially the variety of Biscoites flavors! But, I do think their Sweet Bread needs to be denser. It's lighter than I prefer, but the flavor is great. I would give them a 9, but the sweet bread IS their main feature and it's not as good as the Azorian Bakery on Alum Rock.

I have YET to try a fresh malacada (fried donut like tasting dough of deliciousness!). I have only had some late in the afternoon and I would only want to comment on a fresh one...

I work close by so I stop in often - great bakery! Do go early for a fresh malacada!

YUM!
