Im always up for trying new cuisines and todays lunch specialized in Salvadorean and Mexican. Sabor Savladoreno had burrito options but I thought Id go with a more traditional dish. I asked the guy behind the counter for a recommendation and told me to get the Bistec Ranchero.

Its basically a steak cooked with tomato paste, onions, and other veggies. At $9, the meal is served with pinto beans, rice, and small salad.

rice - kinda bland, could have used some broth to flavor it up.

beans - whole pinto beans and I dont think they added any spices to it. This was more bland than the rice

steak - flank cut and had a lot of fat to it. wasnt the most tender of steaks but the flavor made up for it. Ranchero sauce was honorable but heavy on the oil.

Ive tried the mexican, filipino, costa rican version of bistec ranchero and Sabor's version comes in as average. I did get to try a little bite of the pupusas and I think thats their REAL WINNER. It was like eating cheese filled pancake. I dont think Ive had a place that serves them better. Be prepared to wait some time for the pupusas as they make them from scratch. Based on my lunch, I would say order the pupusas and you'd be set.

We went to Sabor as a long overdue wishlist request. We get there and the place looks RUNDOWN, inside and out. That doesn't bother me too much as many great mexican taqueria joints are rundown looking.

I place an order for a Veggie burrito, even though the request was specifically for Pupusas (I'm just not a pupusa fan). So if you like Pupusas, I highly recommend you going here and trying them. EVERYONE was here for the Pupusas. There was a nice lady making them fresh 1 by 1. They took awhile to make too, so you know they are fresh.

The veggie burrito, however, was a big letdown. The vegetables inside were just kind of blah, nothing exciting. The pinto beans were a bit dry and flavorless. The rice was white (with carrots mixed in) and just weren't my style at all. Reminded me of a burrito from Estebans in Fremont. Oh well, just not my thing.
