It can be hard to judge Stans donut shop without trying their donuts in the morning or whenever they cook them. Terry and I passed by around 1ish and it looked like they were running low on donuts. From what I hear, Stans is a place that will make a set amount of donuts and will close the store when they are finished. Looks like it will be an early day.

With 6 types of donuts to choose from, I ordered a dozen with half of them being my favorite rainbow sprinkles. I couldnt wait to get back to the office and started on one of the rainbow sprinkles in the car. Glaze and colorful sugar ornaments were crackling off into the seats, shirt, and the floor..it was a sight to see. Its a good thing I wasnt driving my car.

I wont lie, I had 3 sinful donuts. About 2 donuts too many, already full from lunch, I have an eating problem. I suspect there might be an illegal ingrediant in Stans Donuts. Im joking but my wouth is watering just thinking about their Cinnamon Glazed Twist...its absolute heaven and Im just dreaming about eating one fresh out of the fryer.

Stans Donuts are crunchy on the outside, fluffy on inside, and good around sweet. Im sure this place will rate a 9 or higher when cooked in the morning but I need to experience it to believe it.

***Update 03.13.06***
Changing score to 9, I must have been out of my mind giving Stans an 8.5

I was turned onto Stans Donuts by coworkers. One of them, Max, even went so far as to call them (when warm) 'Squishy Electric Blankets' that he would love to curl into and fall asleep. I would be hard pressed to disagree. When warm, which seems to be just in the morning, they are truly tremendous. They are maybe 3x larger than krispy kremes and taste better because they are so much doughier. Their glazing is surprisingly similar to Krispy Kreme. Thick and almost crunchy. This is super sweet, but also preserves the moistness inside the doughnut. So you have a nice warm squishy donut that is full of flavor and close to perfect.

The donut shop has a sit-down bar and looks like its been around for a long time. With donuts like these I can now see why. Everytime I have had these donuts, the glazed have been ordered for me, so I have no experience with their other flavors. Maybe Jason can chime in on their other donut offerings.

I made it to Stan's on a saturday morning around 8:30 and the place was packed! Not one seat available and about four people in front of me. I figured the place must be good.

Ordered a half dozen glazed and a half dozen others (chocolate w/nuts & chocolate w/sprinkles). I was lucky enough to get fresh glazed, so fresh the bag was hot walking out. I HAD to try it fresh so I ate one in the parking lot...wow. Warm, super soft and light on the inside while not too sweet. Being from Hawaii, these reminded me of malasadas though not as sweet.

The chocolate donuts were good, nothing to write home about but better than what you'd get at a grocer's bakery. To be fair, I ate them later that day so they weren't as fresh. Doesn't matter, I'm sold on the glazed.

Stan’s Donuts 10/29/07

Running errands in the area, I had a happy find today! STAN’S!

At 1:30 pm, my fingers were crossed Stan’s would still be open. It looked dark from the outside, but hours were until 3pm. Awesome!

I wasn’t expecting there to be too many to choose from at this hour. Lucky me! Stan’s had a nice selection of raised and cake in the case. Old fashioned glazed and chocolate were sitting atop. I’d estimate there were about 8-9 choices for the donut fan this afternoon.

I choose a plain raised and a chocolate old fashioned, two of my favorites.

The raised was a BIG OLE’ SUCKER! Seriously, this donut was at least 30% thicker (higher) than most donut shops in the valley. My beauty was a perfect golden brown with a light band in the middle, soft and moist, just enough slightly sticky glaze, FRESH tasting and quite flavorful. Slightly yeasty – just the way I like ‘em! Easy 9/10

Hard to believe you can get such a good donut at this time of day.

The Old Fashioned Choc. Glazed – A good sized donut, but a little dry and crumbly. The edges not covered with the chocolate glaze were a little hard. These donuts were being kept in the open air, and I bet they would have been moister if kept in the case. The actual donut has a nice buttermilk taste. The glaze was my favorite part – good milk chocolate flavor without being overly sugary. 7.5/10

Service was a little slow, the lady saw me but took her time getting down the counter to help me. She was chatting with a security guard sat at the counter. Looks Stan’s has a sandwich menu as well. Price was .65 per donut.

The glazed donuts however edge Stan’s out and if you find yourself near Homestead and San Tomas, this is a must detour! 8.5 / 10

Chocolate old-fashioned and the bars

Best donuts in the world. I loved it when they put custard in the maple and chocolate. Still the best!

Glazed Goodness

omg. These donuts are other-worldly. I am chomping on a warm one now and am in pure bliss. It just doesn't get any better than this when it comes to Bay Area donuts.
