We had a fun lunch today at Chef Wongs as we were meeting up with some old coworkers to celebrate. Whats even better was our friend was buy us lunch...wooohooo. We all met up around 12:30'ish and it was good to see some old faces.

The waitress sat us down at one of the round tables and the atmosphere was quite relaxed and not bustling like the other places we visit. It was easy to carry a conversation and had no need to yell to be heard.

After sharing a couple of war stories, it was time to order. I started my meal with fried prawns and salt/pepper scallops over broccoli.

fried prawns - heavy on the batter, uncooked and prawns had a weird taste to it. Sweet/sour dipping sauce was a plus.

scallops - battered scallops served over broccoli. This batter was much better than the shrimp and seafood was cooked right. Scallops were still juicy. The thing that bothered me was the saltiness, I think they went overboard with the seasoning here and I must have had 3-4 glasses of water during the lunch.

I dont think I would order the prawns and scallops again. It just didnt sit well with me. I was able to try the Orange Chicken and that definitely was a winner in my book. I would return just for that. Chef Wong might have some tasty dishes and hopefully I can choose the right ones next time.

We had driven by Chef Wong a few times and finally had the opportunity to stop by. The place wasn't very crowded and had a nice clean feel about it. I didn't feel claustrophic or dirty like I do in some other Chinese restaurants. It was a pleasant experience.

For todays lunch I decided to go with the Fried tofu for appetizer and the broccoli and prawns for main course. The fried tofu arrived and was delicious. A bit tough on the outside and gushy on the inside. It was a nice combination, especially when mixed with the salty/spicy juice on the side.

A little later my broccoli/prawns dish arrived. I was less enthused with this. The sauce was a bit runny and the prawns were not too memorable. Broccoli was firm and tasty however. The rice was rice. Nothing memorable about it. I probably wouldn't order this dish next time.

I sampled some of Jasons spicy scallops and broccoli dish and thats got to be the saltiest dish I have ever had. It was practically unedible. They were delicious but it was a bit much in the salt department. Or MSG? Regardless I probably wouldn't order that either.

So overall, I'll give them a 7 because the Tofu dish gave me hope that they could deliver tasty food, just don't expect it to be very subtle in flavoring.

Service was attentive (good water refill count) and friendly.

Stopped by Chef Wongs for dinner tonight with a friend as it is right by where I live. When we arrive at 6:30, there is only one table taken and another table of guests in the process of leaving. We were given a choice in seats and the menus (both English and Chinese) were brought out immediately. Tea and water was then served while we looked over the menu. The menu had a nice touch as some items displayed photos of the food so it made some of our choices easier.

The dishes ranged from 6.95 and up but most of the dishes were 6.95 to 7.95. We decided to go with the Hot and Sour soup, the Thai flavored chicken, and XO beef with veggies. I think they had the soup ready to go as it was brought out to us 5 minutes later. The soup was a bit different as it had some type of meat in it, either chicken or pork. The soup came out steamy hot, which is a plus in my book as I dont like eating lukewarm food. A few minutes later I head our food being cooked in the kitchen and shortly brought out to our table with a tray of rice.

The Thai flavored chicken looked tasty as it wasnt deep fried chicken with the sauce poured over it, rather the sauce was poured on during the cooking process so it was very well coated and a sweet crispy layer. The XO beef looked tender but there was a bit too much green peppers and onions for my taste. Both dishes had the spicy pepper icon next to it on the menu but none of the dishes were spicy for me, and Im considered a light spice eater. The Thai chicken had a little read flakes on it but it was sweeter like honey than spicy. The XO beef had some black peppers in it, but that was the only spiciness about it.

Theres a fine line between tender beef and raw beef. For the beef to be tender, high temperature must be used. Typically Chinese restaurants use wok the beef over high flame so it is tender and cooked but not overcooked. The XO beef here was on the border between being undercooked and being tender. For the most part the beef was cooked and tender but I had one or two beef that didnt taste like it was cooked enough.

During our meal my water our waitress stopped by once and asked us everything was all right while she filled my near empty water cup.

Total meal was 27.00 after tip. The price seems a bit higher than expected for two dishes, soup, and rice (lukewarm rice). There is a difference in portion size from the pictures shown here and what I saw on the dinner plates. The dinner plates were filled with the food without the rice or the broccoli.

The food here is good but is catered more towards a Caucasian crowd than Asian crowd. They do serve some Asian dishes but would need to come back another time to try those. Theres nothing wrong with the food, just felt I had an average meal, plus the menu didnt reflect too many selections. I wouldnt consider this a hole in the wall because there are no cheap rice plates.

Pluses: Decent prices, friendly service and friendly staff, accepts credit cards.

Minuses: None I can find but nothing to wow about.
