I've been to Fair Oaks shopping center about 7 times and everytime I've been, we've noticed a line outside of Barn Thai. Is it that good? We arrived before the lunch rush and sat down in the center of the dining room. I had asked for a table but the waiter had told me they are reserved for parties of 4. Quite understandable as this place gets packed fairly fast.

I started off with the Phuket beer if I remember correctly is brewed locally at Berkeley. Wasn't too impressed with the beer as it reminded me of a fancy version of coors. I placed my order for Shrimp pad thai and shortly afterwards, our waitress brought back a vegetable soup (image 5).

The soup is commonly found in Thai restaurants where it's offered free. There wasn't anything special about the soup, it's pretty much there to tease your stomach until the main dish appears.

My shrimp pad thai (images 7 and 8) was a hearty sized portion with a fried eggroll. Your standard ingredients apply; noodles, julianne carrots, sprouts, egg, tofu, scallions, chopped peanuts, and about 4 shrimps. I asked for spicy and thank gawd they answered. Noodles were firm and had a slightly sweet glaze to them. In comparing this dish to other Thai restaurants, I noticed this one didn't leave a heavy red oil. Overall a very good dish, repeat order for sure.

For $8, I have no complaints. Thai service didn't disappoint, the food was served in less than 10 minutes. I think Terry and I were able to finish lunch in about 18 minutes. Not bad at all.

If we did a shoot out for the best interior at Fair Oaks Shopping Center, I'd say Barn Thai is at the top of the list so far.

Jason and I are on a mission to take down all of the restaurants in this amazingly restaurant-packed complex. It was a hidden jewel that Jason found, kind of out of the way and packed with untapped restaurants. A Jatbar gold mine so to speak. We are about halfway thru the place and today it was Barn Thai.

We had noticed that this place was always packed, probably one of the busiest places in the complex. Today we arrived a bit early and was able to get a table. Sadly we tried for a booth, but the guy there told us we couldn't take a booth with only 2 people. It hurt to sit down at the tiny table in the middle of the restaurant while the other booths were occupied by groups of 2. Thanks.

Well, I was in a bit of a sour mood, just because of the customer service, but thinking back Jason and I agreed that the guy was probably in the right - the place DOES get pretty busy during lunch. So no points subtracted (even though I was thinking that was a negative one, before I sampled the food).

I looked over the menu and decided i had to go with my favorite Sala Thai item - the yellow curry. I ordered it Thai spicy. I also went with a thai iced tea. The lady taking our order was very friendly and efficient. In fact, the entire place is run VERY efficiently. If you work nearby and are on a quick lunch, this is your place. We had our food in a few minutes. GREASED LIGHTING I say.

And the food was pretty good. It included a veggie eggroll, a heap of rice, and my yellow curry. I must first say that the yellow curry was not very creamy, its more of a runny consistency (compared to my favorite - Sala Thai) but they really honored my selection of heat - and it came out pretty hot. There was only one potato and just a few pieces of tofu, there was not a whole lot to the yellow curry. Seeing Jason's dish, I think he made the better choice with the pad thai. In fact another random lady in the restaurant commented positively on seeing Jason's dish as well. Survey says - try the Pad Thai.

Now don't get me wrong, the pad thai was a pretty good dish here, especially with the spice. Would I order it again? Probably not, after seeing the pad thai. Yet its hard to find much fault with this place. The prices weren't overly high, and the service was excellent. If you are in the area, I would recommend stopping by.
