Fish and Chip places are hard to come by. I usually hate 95% of fish and chips places I visit. I dislike soggie batter, too much batter, not enough fish, too oily, undercooked, high prices, basically anything that looks like you can get in the frozen section at the market. With my picky laundry list, how does Bay Fish and Chips do?

Quite well, I wasnt too hungry today..dont know why. I ordered 1 piece fish and 3 shrimps. Batter was crunchy, slightly oily, and fish was good size. Shrimps werent overcooked and about the size of tiger prawns. I like the batter at Half Penny a tiny bit better. Although I got steamed rice with my meal, I got to try the fries...dang...those are great!

A definite return in my book...if Im in Sunnyvale area, Bay Fish and Chips is my 1st choice, farther north Id go to Jonathans, and to the East Id go to Half Penny or H Salt Fish n Chips.

We found this place from a wishlist item and decided to give it a try. We would have never found it otherwise, it is so hidden from the street that you wouldn't know its there unless you were looking very very hard.

Once you find it and are in there, its classic fish and chips all the way. They really don't serve much else but fried seafood here. The prices are about inline with traiditional fish and chips places. We placed our order and waited. And waited. The wait was long. The food arrived and the presentation wasn't as nice as, say, Half Penny.... but who is looking? The fries are GREAT. Better than Half Penny. The fish was maybe a notch lower than the fish at Half Penny as the batter tasted a little more burned. The thing that saved it and completely blew me away was the tartar sauce. If you like tartar sauce, you will be amazed. This is the best tartar sauce I have ever had in my life. Its exploding with flavor. I'm sure its completely bad for you, but it tastes sooo good. I must have used a quarter bottle on my order of 2 fish and chips. I was slathering my fries with it as well. Its what saves this place from an 8 rating. Since this is fairly close to my work, I think I will be returning here again for my fix of tartar sauce. Oh yeah, and fish and chips.

If you like fish and chips, you've definitely got to try this place! It's not exactly the easiest place to find (inner corner restaurant in a strip mall), which likely explains why there isn't a long line out the door at lunch, but once you've found it, you're glad you did! The fish and chips at this place are phenomenally better than the ones I've tried in London - the HOME of fish and chips!

I may be going out on a limb here with a 9 rating, but I'm solely basing that on the food - I ordered the lunch special of a 2-piece fish and chips combo. The fries were really good and crunchy and the fish batter was perfect. They use the same great batter for their other items as well - so if you're feeling adventurous, I'd recommend substituting the fries for the mushrooms or artichokes (a nominal additional fee).

The wait for our food was a bit on the long side, so that would have to be my only complaint - not a rush lunch place.

The tartar sauce, I must agree with Terry, is very good! The owner brings each table a bottle of ketchup, vinegar, and (chilled!) tartar sauce, which most people use with anything in their fried basket o' food :)

Sidenote: The next time you're there...notice the poor goldfish on the counter who have to watch their other sea friends get fried daily...it's the circle of life I suppose.

What a weird little place! If you feel like some good fish and chips and you want to go back to the 1980s for half an hour, this is the place for you.

It was a blustery day today, and I was in the mood for some comfort food, so I decided to visit “The Bay” since it's been on my list for a long time now. The place is tucked away in corner and feels dark and dated. It looks like it's been here forever. There are faux wood beams on the walls and ceiling, various ship paintings here and there, and a fishtank in the middle. The place appears to be owned and run by an older asian couple. I walked up to the counter and selected my order – meal #16, three prawns, one piece fish and chips. The owner repeated my order back to me (I mention this for a reason). Total was $8.66. A bit on the high side for the divey atmosphere. I sat and waited. There were three other patrons in the place. Five minutes later some food arrived, but it looked to me like two pieces of fish plus chips. Maybe the prawns we fused together in one piece? What do I know? I’ve never been here, so I assumed it was just me, and ate a few chips. As luck would have it, my cellphone rang at that moment and I was too busy to eat for several minutes. This gave the owner the chance to discover he had given me the wrong order. He walked up after I was off the phone and said “number 16?” and I nodded. He quickly removed my plate and replaced it with the correct one. No harm done, but what a spaz! Did he give my old plate to someone else? I have no idea. It's not like the place was crowded! He and his wife then argued in Chinese for the next five minutes. Every once in a while I could hear her say the word “concentrate!” Kind of hilarious actually.

Total time to get my *correct* food was just under 9 minutes. On the slow side, as others have mentioned. My food was worth the wait though. Fish – the best thing in the basket. Nice crunchy batter combined with delicious tender fish, rounded out with killer tartar sauce. The prawns – pretty good but standard. The chips – just regular fries but with kind of an outer crust of batter in spots. Very good, but some of the fries were soggy and limp.

One nit – They need to provide a small plate or something to keep your ketchup and sauce for dipping. I was having trouble finding a spot, especially when my basket was full.

Though my meal wasn't too greasy, my stomach doesn't do too well this kind of food, so I'll probably not be back soon, but no loss of points for that. I enjoyed my meal and give The Bay a decent rating.
