I was quite surpised that Eddie actually had a craving for a good burger. I looked through my list and found Chubbys Broiler which had been sitting in my queue for some time now. We made the short trek over to Sunnyvale and Chubbys is located in the same shopping center as Stevens Philly Cheesesteak and a crazy Pho noodle house. The line was out the DOOR!! I remember going for Pho years ago and dont recall it being that memorable. We're here for burgers anyways.
I always get a good feeling inside when I see burgers over an open flame. Yeah yeah..hold your burger king or carls jr jokes...Chubby Broiler is different, the quality of meat is much tastier than those chain burger places. I ordered the cheeseburger with fries.
burger - for a single pattie, they are larger than the norm, not sure what they weigh but if you get the jumbo pattie, its 1/2 pounder. The burger had dark grill marks with the burger cooked near well-done. I would have preferred medium on the pink side but the meat was of good quality. Overall, the meat was enjoyable.
fries - served hot, just ok about average rating
veggies - yaaay, you get to build your burger your way with the fixings bar. I gotta give props to Chubbys Broiler for keeping the bar clean. All the vegetables looked like they were just cut and still wet as if they just washed minutes ago. Good selection of stuff and sparkling clean arrangement
With prices a respectable $5-7 a meal, I like Chubby's Broiler burgers and would recommend it to anyone wanting a good tasting grilled burder.

I used to work near the complex where Chubbys is located and came to the Pho Queen next door but had actually never been to Chubbys (or the place that occupied the location before Chubbys). So when Jason mentioned that Jatbar should review it, I was familiar with the area and anxious to delve into this new territory some more.
Chubbys looked to be under new ownership and the place appeared to be very clean, the staff attentive, the burger condiment bar well stocked. My hopes were getting up.
Then I spied the menu. No veggie patty substitution offering. No Boca Patties. Not good. Once in awhile, I will eat a beef patty, but nowadays it just doesn't taste as good as Boca. Seriously. So it was with great hesitation that I ordered a cheeseburger with the beef patty. I could have gone with the veggie sandwich or a salad to stay veggie, but come on its Chubbys Broiler. I need a burger.
Well the burger arrived and it was decent size. Not the hugest, but I didn't have a big appetite for a beef patty so the size wasn't a concern. The fries that it came with were average, nothing spectacular. I was glad to stock up on pickles in the condiment bar. They also had the mayo, ketchup, and mustard that I needed. Its all good.
Then I ate it. Well, its a beef patty. Nothing spectacular that made me like this particular beef patty. It was just an OK experience for me. I probably will not return unless they offer a Boca patty. And even then, there are other better burger places closer to my work and home. If I liked beef patties, worked nearby and had the itch for a burger, though, I would stop by.
I hope Chubbys is still getting setup and organized, as I think the lack of non-meat patties (in the Bay Area especially) is quite an oversight.

Where to find a good burger near work? And Im not talking a chain fast food place…I figure Ive driven by Chubbys Broiler at least 100 times, its best I give them a try.
I enter at 1:10 pm this afternoon to a large gathering of World Cup Soccer fans (thats Futbol to the European crowd!). Spain vs. Tunisia was a live game! 2 large TV set kept everyones eyes peeled. I walked up to the counter and was greeted very welcoming gentleman. I said hell with the calorie and ordered a cheeseburger, onion rings and a small soda. All rang up under $6.
I sat down at a shared table with some Soccer fans. The décor is basic, nothing fancy. Pretty clean although theyre in an older run down building.
My order was up in less than 10 minutes. My number was called and I walked up to the counter. My burger looked pretty good and I enjoyed putting on the vegetables and condiments I wanted from their bar. I did feel however that I got 5 times the bread, verses beef patty. The bun was fresh, toasted and tasty with sesame seeds on top, but was too thick for the patty. It would have been a better bun for a double meat order. The ptty was the same diameter, but not all that thick. Maybe I should have ordered the ˝ pound burger? That just seemed like too much. I also felt the onion rings order was a bit small. I got maybe 8-9 rings of small size, less than I had expected.
I took my first bite and it was hard to get around all that bread, but the meat was tasty and juicy. It was cooked to medium well. I prefer medium or medium rare, but this is the standard cooking temp with restaurants. I use to work for a corporate food service monster and the fear of e.coli is always a concern so you really cant get a medium-rare burger anymore. It was juicy nonetheless.
With the addition of pickles, onions, ketchup and several leaves of crisp iceburg I was happy with my creation. By pressing down on the bread I cold bite into this sucker better.
Onions rings were average, nothing special. Reminded me of the ones you get at Burger K*ng. Unlimited refills on sodas was nice, just order a small.
Overall it was a decent burger, but nothing out of this world. One note to Terry: they now offer a veggie burger. Id be back if in the area, but I wouldnt go out of my way. I think a burger from Carls Jr. would satisfy better. Overall a fair 7.5

On my first visit to Chubby's I ordered the jumbo burger with fries. I waited about 10 minutes...a bit on the long side, but I guess they are making it to order. The burger was very good and quite large. The fixins bar is decent but could be better (just the basics). Fries were very disappointing – cold and soggy. Cost was $5.40, a good price if the fries had been good, not as good for what I got. Rating so far = 6.5.
On my recent visit I decided on the same order, since I was craving a burger. My experience was equivalent, except this time the fries were hot and very good. All in all, my meal was satisfying, if not all that good for me. But I kept having the same thought: "This tastes just like the burger and fries from the roach coach outside my office. Why wouldn't I go there and save the time and trip?" A good question. I may be back to try some other non-burger items they offer, but this place has nothing going for it that makes me want to hurry back (other than easy parking and small crowds). Since the fries were good and the price is right, I'll raise my rating a tad. |
