I sighed upon arriving at El Caminito, I could have sworn Ive been here before awhile ago and remembered it wasnt that good. A lot can change in the last 3-4 years so I might have to eat my words.

The waiter showed us our brought out the menus and disappeared to the kitchen. It took quite some time to actually order which is a drag for people on the clock. Looking to try something new, I ordered the Pollo al Cilantro plate.

rice - super good stuff, nice and fluffy just the way I like it.

beans - melted cheese on top, runny, I like

chicken - at first, I was disappointed, it looked like boiled chicken with mixed red bell peppers and cilantro. Looks like it had no seasoning....I paid $8 for this? Im sadly building my taco with corn tortillas, chicken, rice, beans, and the table salsa. I take a bite and wow, its surprisingly good. Who would have thought? The meal was much lighter than my other mexican meals and didnt feel too bloated. Cilantro and peppers was a perfect alternative than relying on heavy salts and lard. Good job El Caminito!

Im eating my words right now. I can only speak for the dish I ordered as I thought it was a lighter tasting mexican meal. It was a tad more expensive for lunch but I think it was justified. If you are looking for that super duper heavy taqueria taste, Im not sure if El Caminito will fill your needs. Other than that, I like El Caminito and would come back.

I saw El Caminito and was a little apprehensive. It seemed like perhaps not a real taqueria and more of a foo-foo restaurant. The menu looked promising, and when I saw the Fishermans burrito, I knew I had to try it. The serving was not massive, but decent. Especially for the Fishermans burrito which was very rich. The only downside was the price which was nearly $10.

The burrito itself was crab and shrimp stuffed into a tortilla with white sauce covering it. There was nothing else so they looked like small burritos. Overall, though, it was heavenly in flavor. The rice was kind of dry and blah, the refried beans were nice. The rice and beans were not as good as Fremonts La Casita, which is my benchmark for sit-down dining.

Service was a little slow, considering we were one of the few people in the restaurant.

El Caminito has the usual strip mall frontage but behind the doors there is a fairly nice interior with subdued tropical colors. The decor is festive with Mexican puppets and the usual sombreros and posters. They've also installed an open wooden frame to make part of it feel like a cabana. A nice touch.

I've eaten here twice now and have found it be just OK. The menu is varied but strangely limited. For instance, you can get a wet burrito, but only beef. Their enchilada with house sauce is chicken only, their green sauce enchilada is cheese only. It's weird to make limitations like this, though it seems that alterations are possible. On my first visit here I had to negotiate a little to get the green sauce enchilada with chicken, but this seemed to puzzle the waitress.

On my second visit I really wanted an enchilada with standard tomato-based enchilada sauce, but it wasn't offered. Due to this and other limitations mentioned above, there wasn't much on the menu I could get excited about. I opted for the Enchilada El Caminito, a chicken enchilada with a sour cream-based sauce. Rice was OK, nothing special. Beans were slightly better than average. Sliced almonds on the enchilada made a nice addition. It was quite tasty and enough food for me. The cost was $13 including tip, which is a little on the high side for lunch.

Service was casual but too slow. I folded my menu and was ready to order about 10 seconds after sitting down, but it took another 5 minutes for someone to come take my order.

I don't plan on going back to El Caminito unless I have plenty of time for lunch, have a hankering for mexican food, and am in the immediate area. Since my favorite record store (in the same strip mall) has just closed, this isn't very likely.

I was dying for some good Mexican Food and it was late - 8:00 pm or so and I had just left work... My favorite Mexican place was too far away.

I remembered El Caminito as I drive by it from time to time.

I ordered 3 dinner plates to go...

-Carne Asada Plate
-Chili Colorado
-Chili Verde

The Carne was very flavorful... Well marinated and sesoned perfectly. The meat however was much tougher than I like. Especially the ends of the piece. The cat made out but had to work on it to get it down. The thickness was good, but maybe a tip would be the slice it in half and serve two thinner pieces. Overall, I was happy with this choice, but the toughness was a let down. The refried beans were pure heaven however! Creamy, full of flavor and texture... I could have eaten 2x as much! I liked the extras I got - the jalapeno rings and strip of green chili with my carne - it made for some good self-made taco's with the onions.

My husband and buddy wolfed down the Colorado and Verde... My husband said both were very good but the Verde lacked some boldness in flavor. Of course this man drinks hot sauce so take this with a grain of salt. Both looked delicious and the scent was nothing but intoxicating.

On the way home my hunger got the best of me and I muched down on the salsa and chips. The chips were a stone ground rough cut style with light salt... the salsa was very cold in temperature and it was hard to tell the full flavor. Plenty of cilantro onion and tomato however.

Overall - a well deserved 7.5.

I should return to eat in, as take ut can be different from the actual eat in experience and quality.
