Met up with Steve today for a little high end dining. Its a bit tough to find the place if you haven't seen it before. Its right off the freeway, first driveway on the right once you exit. It shares a lot with the hotel, so of course with the popularity of this place and of the hotel, you are in for some tight parking situation. Wasn't too bad though, just a bit of idling around the lot til I found a spot during the high noon rush.

The place is high end inside. You can tell the man eats here, closing his deals here on a regular basis. The wishlist was rather scant in the recommendation for this place, stating simply - kebabs - so I guess that left little room for straying. I had to try them.

We didn't have reservations, but the wait wasn't too long. It was just a matter of a few minutes while they prepared a table for us. People were dressed up with slacks here, but there were a good number of folks in jeans and t-shirt like myself, so I didn't feel too far out of place.

The menu was large, but I knew that I was going for the vegetable Kebabs. Steve went with the beef kebab. The bread appetizer looked temping, but we had to try the Mediterranean sampler as well. Might as full get the full experience here. At $14 for the appetizer, it was no small decision, for sure, but a wise one it turns out.

The bread appetizer that was free, as awesome. It included a flat bread and a soft mushy bread (sorry not very descriptive). Oil & Vinegar with garlic was provided for dipping. The flat bread was by the numbers. Done well. Nothing special to me though. The mushy bread was FANTASTIC. I could have OD'd on this stuff. Very flavorful and rich. Both breads actually went well with anything we dipped them in.

The appetizer arrived quickly and was comprised of dolmas, hummus, tabouleh, and eggplant. Everything was really delicious. Even at the $14, it is a must order for my next visit.

Steve had good things to say about his dish. For mine, the grilled vegetables were very flavorful and fresh tasting. I had no problem finishing them all. The highlight of this dish however was the rice. I could have just ordered a big heaping pile of this buttered rice and been happy. It was probably the best middle eastern rice I have ever had. Soooo rich. This rice gets at least a 9.5 rating alone.

Yeah the bill hurt a bit, but for a special occasion its hard to pass up this place. If they opened a Faz Express with prices cut in half with a less formal atmosphere, we would easily be in the mid 9 territory.

Terry said it all in his review: "You can tell The Man eats here." Quite a nice place with lots of business deals and work-subsidized lunches going down, though it's the bay area, so almost nobody is wearing a suit.

A friend of mine at work wanted to go to here, so I tagged along. We parked around the back side of the Sheraton and walked through the pool area to the restaurant. There is no shortage of parking back here if the lot in front is full. The restaurant interior is large, clean and quite fancy. Pretty stunning really. It almost looks too nice for the aging hotel that surrounds it. The staff was friendly and chatty and we were seated quickly near the bar. Looking at the menu I was quickly able to tell this is was Mediterranean food with a Persian bent. Ghormeh Sabzi was offered on the special menu, and I almost ordered it, but I saw the seasoned, rolled beef and chicken kabob plate and knew that was for me. (My friend got the sabzi). The bread arrived and it was nothing like Terry described in his review. Sad. Just cold slices of flatbread that you could get from a store. My friend mentioned they had a limited menu today, so I was hoping it was an anomaly. I was looking forward to that bread!

Our meals arrived and it was a lot of food. Here's the breakdown of my meal:
Beef kabob – omigod this was good stuff. Moist, tender full of flavor
Chicken kabob – not as good, but decent moistness and flavor
Rice – Wonderful, bi-color basmati rice with butter. Perfect.
Roasted whole roma tomato – quite good and cooked perfectly
Green beans and peppers – pretty good; nothing special
Total cost of this meal was around $15. On the steep side, but not terrible for the large portions of great food, good service and beautiful setting. I will most definitely be back. 8.5 so far.

On my next visit here I was alone and arrived after 1 pm. It was the hour of the mass exodus so the staff were too busy to notice me at first. Finally I walked over to the bar and seated myself (but then I was going to sit there anyway). Soon a waiter came over with a menu and I immediately ordered the Ghormeh Sabzi. Bread arrived quickly and lo' and beyond they served me two kinds of bread Terry described: flatbread served crispy and slightly warm, and a more spongy style bread with a buttery taste. Both were very good but didn't knock my socks off.

My ghormeh sabzi arrived in record time and it was awesome. Full of big meaty chunks of lamb and well seasoned. Maybe a tad too oily but this did not stop me from using my flatbread as a ramscoop to get every last bite. The rice was as delicious as before. An eminently satisfying meal. Total cost was $19 including tax & tip. This is about twice what I normally pay for lunch, but Faz has such good food and ambience that I can't take off too much for price, but then I can't give it a 9 rating either.

Pros: Great food; Large menu; Great setting
Cons: High prices

I live for spicy dishes. This is probably the hottest dish I've ever received in a true restaurant (not street food). I admire them for serving it. I can't say it was successful though. It was actually too hot for me.
