We rounded up a small group to head out to Hanamaru but they are closed! Maybe tomorrow so we went to Hala B's a couple of blocks down. If you have trouble finding it, its behind the Carl's Jr and next to Madras Cafe. The lady behind the counter was completely swamped and overwhelmed with customers. They normally have 3 people working but someone called in sick. The wait time was long but it was understandable and she repeatedly apologized for taking so long.

With 3 different cuisines to choose from, I went with the Pakistani dish called Chicken Biryani. It was $8 but the plate was filled with a lot of food. Its basically chicken and rice seasoned with exotic spices, cucumber sauce, and topped with cilantro. It was a tasty dish (picture #8). The chicken is served with bone-in. My only complaint was the drumstick, it tasted old like it was cooked a day or two ago. Luckily the other piece of chicken was fresher or we would be seeing this Hala B's at a 7. I like Hala B's as its a no frills restaurant serving home style cooking.

*** Update 09.22.05 ***
Thanks to Gena for reminding us that Hala-B is closed.

From jatboard...
I tried stopping by Hala-Bs the other night, and found the place empty and locked up; from the sign on the door, it sounds like yet another Hawaiian BBQ place might be going in its stead. Ah well.

Hala B's was a driveby so had no idea what to expect. The menu looked solid with a nice selection of middle eastern, indian, and even Turkey Sandwich. I decided to go with the Hummos and Falafel Sandwich. Sorry, falafel sold out today. Unfortunate. OK, just went with the falafel sandwich.

Then we waited. The wait was very long. I will not deduct for this though as the lady was obviously understaffed today. She apologized profusely to me every time she stopped at the table.

My food arrived, and the falafel sandwich looked legit. The falafel balls were monstrous and not greasy at all. In fact they were a bit on the dry side. I didn't order a drink and regretted it while eating the falafel sandwich. The vegetables were fresh and tasty. The hot sauce wasn't overly spicy but good enough to let you know something was there. If there was some hummos in there, it would have been perfect, but as it was, it was more than worth the price charged. I would not hesitate to return if in the area as the menu was large enough and the recipes exciting enough to keep the regular customer satisfied.
