Since my review is way overdue, I can offer you the quickie version.

I ordered the tall beer which is considered a half. Yes I did catch a buzz off of it and yes it did make me sleepy when I came back to work. I thought it had a funny smell to the top but Terry reassured me that this was the way it had to be.

The bread was decent but thrown into the microwave for heating.

My lunch was the smoked pork chops with potato pancakes and sauerkraut. I don't like sauerkraut and passed it on to Terry. I think he enjoyed it as he ate the whole thing.

Potato Pancakes were awesome and had similar stuff in Germany. The applesauce might have been out of a jar and doesn't bother me. The smoke pork chops = slice of thick ham. If you like ham, you'll love this. I don't recall what type of gravy they put on it. I devoured the entire dish, nothing left behind.

Overall I thought the food was good. Eating the food took less than 10 minutes. Waiting for the food, waiting for the check, hmmm, I'd put it in the 50-60 minute range. Although our waitress was super nice, she was the only one serving 5+ tables. The service took a really long time. We're talking, you might be able to get halfway through The Grapes of Wrath with service like today. Try something new, try Hardy's Bavaria.

I took a lot of German classes in my school days, I also spent a summer living in Bavaria (Prien am Chiemsee to be exact) and southern germany has a special place in my heart. So I am always a bit harsh when trying German food. To make matters worse, I don't eat much meat anymore, so finding non-meat items makes the search even more tough.

There are a few solid places in the bay area, like Teske's, but sadly it is not very likely you will find one that doesn't feel like a dimly lit bar boasting a menu filled with heavy meaty foods.

Hardys breaks the mold. Don't get me wrong. It feels distinctly German, both in decor, music, service, and - yeah, sorry - wait times. Service is friendly but daaamn its slow.

Inside the place was fairly empty when we arrived. We were seated by a nice sunny window. It felt nice to have some light in the place. The diminutive menus were brought out. There were not many selections but all of the biggies were here. A ton of beer, spaetzle, wienershnitzel, sausages, sauerkraut, Spezi, you name it.

I stuck with the Spezi to drink (a mixture very popular in bavaria consisting of part lemonade and part coke. Hadn't had this in YEEEEARRRS.) I also went with the spaetzle with vegetables. I was so happy to see *serious* non meat items on the menu, you won't believe. If I was going for meat eating, it would have been the wienerschnitzel all the way.

After ordering Jason and I sat back and talked about the glory days of College and Europe (I suppose they kind of go together that way). It was funny that we both happened to be wearing our respective college alumni shirts that day too. So weird.

Food took awhile, but not too too long, just a little long. My dish was not HUGE, looked to be about just right for one sitting. The presentation of this dish was nice with the mini pan that it was prepared in. Spaetzle is a kind of thick pasta mixed with butter. Its really really good. And from there, you do whatever you want with it. This dish happened to have a LOT of cheese mixed in, with vegetables like carrots and broccoli. The dish was great and I had no problems polishing it off. If anything, they didn't provide enough. But that was probably for the best as its very rich with all that butter and cheese.

After getting our food, we wre pretty much forgotten. We waited a super long time to get the check. I finally gave up and went to the bar/register to pay and leave. I really look forward to returning to try the other few veggie items on the menu, and I won't fault them too much for the wait as we were warned about this beforehand, and the food was so darn good.

So here I am recommending Hardys to you. And here I am warning you that you will have a long wait. :)
