Mike brought this lovely hole in the wall establishment to jatbar. He warned us beforehand about Shanghai Flavor Shop being a bit on the seedy side. I had to remind him that we thrive on these type of places...cmon, isn't jatbar all about finding food for the common man?

Pan Fried Pork Buns are the must get items here. A visit for this item is justified. I've never had dumplings fried like these and they are simply amazing. The pork buns are similar XLB (xiao long bao) but with a deep fried bottom. The inside is juicy with an addicting flavor. $5.50 for 6 pieces is a steal.

Sauteed Crystal Prawns (chinese gravy with shrimps). Not sure why the other guys weren't too impressed with this dish. I loved it. It's a simple dish that reminded me an excellent shrimp with lobster sauce without the eggs/bamboo shoots/water chestnuts. A dish I can't seem to find in the bay area but that's another story. The prawns were on the small side but they were cooked just right. Kinda salty but you can't talk me out of re-ordering this dish again.

The mushroom and gluten noodle soup was incredibly oily. Think Exxon Valdez spilled in the kitchen. If it had 1/2 the oil, it would be 2x better.

Table was sticky as if they pour soda and placed the tables outside, let it dry, then brought it back in for customers to let their arms stick to the table.

The chopsticks had seen better times, they were old and weathered through numerous meals.

(Overall)
Loved this place and wanting to come back for the Pan Fried Pork Buns. It's a hole in the wall so don't expect fine dining table cloths. Prices are cheap and portion sizes even better making this a restaurant an enjoyable visit.

Took jason and terry to this joint back in my pre-agent days, but just went back and can confirm the only 4 four words you still need to know:

PAN FRIED PORK BUNS

This is the best item here, I've never had anything quite like it anywhere else. This time some were 'juicier' than others, but all are filled w/ a great tasty savory pork mixture and dough which is thin/soft on top but has a nice deep fried wok hay crunch on the bottom. They tend to be very hot when they first arrive, so best to first bite/poke a hole on top and let some heat escape. And make sure you eat them on a spoon so you don't waste any of the yummy 'juice'!

Unfortunately, other items here are mediocre and tend to be very greasy, I can't recommend anything else.

Currently half the storefront is boarded up which makes it look even more like a hole in the wall then usual.

If you are in a hurry, get here before noon. by about 1215 every table was taken and people were waiting.

It might fun to do a dumpling 'shootout' and hit up this place, tong dumpling and shanghai dumpling consecutively. Burp!

I give the PFPBs a 9 but everything else a 6, for a (generous) average of 7.5.
