Japanese food is one of my favorites cuisines to eat and when I found out we were doing Shohoh today, I was quite excited. We've been visiting Fair Oaks Plaza frequently these last couple of months slowly but surely reviewing each restaurant one by one. Having heard nothing about Shohoh, I had no expectations or even knew what type of Japanese food they served.

I had to up the ISO on the camera to 800 and pray the pictures would come out. The dining room was soooo dark and in dire need of proper lighting for lunch. I wasn't in the mood for sushi and decided on tonkatsu with udon noodles.

My meal rang in at $7.95 which isn't too bad for Japanese food. Pork cutlet was served on the side with salad. Sliced thin and freshly fried, the pork was juicy and somewhat on the small portion.

The udon was absolutely terrible. The noodles had zero firmness to them as if they had been boiling for hours. It's like the flimsy noodles you get in canned soup. The broth didn't fare much better as it was completely bland. They had a couple shreds of tempura flakes and green onions but it was overwhelmingly watered down.

Pork cutlet I enjoyed, ubon + noodles I didn't like. I doubt I would make a return visit as the Japanese restaurant scene in the South Bay is too competitive.

I didn't have high hopes about this place beforehand. We only knew about it because we were trying to try all the restaurants in this complex. We arrive and its pretty packed inside, a good sign. Once seated, I look over the menu and am impressed by the large selection. I decide to go with a California Roll and a Dragon Roll.

California Rolls arrived lightning quick. Like out-of-the-fridge quick. It tasted less than fresh too. Rice was a bit on the tough side and the flavoring in general was pretty subdued. I was disappointed with this.

The Dragon Roll took a LONG time to arrive so my hopes were much higher for this. And certainly it looks great. And it was pretty good, except for the lackluster rice again. And, you know, I would have been happy with it, if the Dragon Roll was not $11. But I just felt like I way overpaid for this kind of quality. If it was $8 or $9 I probably would have no complaints. As it is, I left the place with a rather negative experience, and out nearly $20.

I probably won't return, which is a shame, as service was friendly and the place seems to be popular.
