Thanks to Gena (mountainviewca.net) for submitting Sugar Butter Flour pastry shop in Sunnyvale. A new pastry shop located in the old spot where Fujii Bakery occupied. We made it over here after an uneventful lunch at Vegi Garden. Both Terry and I were in a bad mood and hoping good pastries would cheer us up.

We walked into a busy lunch rush and had to wait. I'll apologize for the pictures as they don't accurately show the beautiful display case of sweets. There were too many people inside and me taking pictures with 99.9% women around would make me look like a giant pervert. I snapped a couple of shots and one of the workers even ducked out of my way. I was busted....haha.

Since I was hungry, I spent $10 on goodies. No, they aren't all for me, I did share with co-workers. Let's start the eating list.

double chocolate cookie ($.90, image 5) - they must put drugs in their chocolate because it is phenomenal! Semi-Dark/Dark chocolate that melts in your mouth with none of that cheap waxy feel to it. I love the chocolate they used. Described as a cookie, the texture was enough to be a brownie. Crazy good.

thumb print cookie ($.90, image 4) - generous amounts of raspberry jam over a buttery baked cookie. Cookie crust was delicate and crumbled with each bite. Plenty of jam in every mouthful.

mini chocolate croissants ($1.50, image 8,9) - kinda expensive for something so small but I gotta hand it to Sugar Butter Flour, it was amazing. The dough was like a lightly buttered filo with a small bar of dark chocolate in the center. I made 2 visits and the 2nd batch was golden brown and more flaky. Loved it.

croissant ($2.50?, image 10) - I've been to France a number of times and this is the closest thing I've had to a parisian croissant. Need I say more?

French macaroons ($.90, image 6,7,12) - The last time I had this was in french town called Calais. I haven't seen these in the states but then again, I don't go out of my way to look for them. French macaroons are different than regular macaroons as these are 2 airy cookies with different cream or fruit fillings in the center. There's no coconut shreds but made of almond something(crushed almonds? almond butter? flour?). The outer cookie is slightly crunchy and has a chewy center. I tried raspberry, chocolate, coffee, vanilla and I thought the coffee flavored ones were the bomb. They are tiny and probably pack giant size calories but it's well worth it.

Nothing was outrageously too sweet, too buttery, or too floury (is that a word?). Sugar Butter Flour knows their ratios and mastered the combination of the 3 key ingredients. I've made 2 visits and the items I tried were outstanding. I have yet to try their personal desserts or specialty cakes but confident I'll enjoy those like the rest. All this stuff does come at a cost as the prices are some of the highest I've paid anywhere.

Sugar Butter Flour is my new favorite bakery and if you want to try high-end sweets with a creative twist, well, now you know.

It is Saturday morning around 10:30 and already a steady stream of customers. Most of the customers ahead of me order cookies and pastries with their coffee drinks. My main interests were their cupcakes and croissants. I was hoping to try out their chocolate croissants but the basket of that was empty. One of the customers ahead of me inquired if they had anymore in the back and the lady at the counter said that they already released a second batch since morning and it’s just been flying off the basket. I guess I’ll have to show up even earlier if I want a taste of those.

Croissant: I’ve never been to France but easily one of the better croissants I’ve tasted. I purchased two and managed to polish off both when I got home. The croissant had a crispy layer on the outside, flakey and soft on the inside. It tasted very buttery. (9/10)

Almond Croissant ($3.50): I was somewhat disappointed at this croissant, as it tasted nothing like the butter croissant. The interior was not flakey or soft, instead it was somewhat too crispy. Not enough almond paste, instead it was at the tail end of the croissant. I probably wouldn’t order this again. It wasn’t bad just wasn’t to my liking. (7.5/10)

Red Velvet Cupcake ($3): The cupcake tasted good. The cake held up on its own without the frosting as it wasn’t dry and still moist enough 8 hours later. The frosting was a bit too much and too sweet. Needless to say I ate as much frosting as was needed and had plenty leftover to throw away. (8/10)

Coconut Cupcake ($3): This was one of the best cupcakes I’ve had in a long time. If you love coconut like I do, this is a must buy. The top part tasted like one giant coconut macaroon. The icing wasn’t too sweet so it complimented the cupcake well. I didn’t have this cupcake till next morning and the cake itself still held up and was moist. (10/10)

Prices are a bit on the high side and you’ll need to try everything to determine what it is you like and don’t like as nothing is expected to taste the same as what you imagine it to be. Plenty of parking in this mall strip and the hours are very convenient. Friendly service.

Lemon Poppyseed Marzipan Bread

You could really taste both the lemon and the almond flavor. Really most and intense flavor. LOVED it. Bought chocolate croissants for my kids...yum.
