This is it. You are witnessing history here. I am giving a filipino restaurant an 8. This is absolutely unheard of. My wife is filipino and I can feel confident in saying that I have seen a LOT of filipino food, and have tried a few here and there. While at pinoy parties, there are occasions when I see some delicious homemade items, my luck at catered (which most filipino party dishes are) items is especially poor. They are either devoid of veggies, full of grease, awful smelling to my unappreciative nose, or usually all of the above.

So it was with UTMOST hesitation that I approached Gerrys Grill. My wife wanted to try it. Its actually a chain in the Philippines, with their first establishment outside of the PI opening here in Union City. Which probably isn't too surprising. I hope it does well.

Anyway, we arrive and I was expecting it to be packed, as the website bills it as the super destination for families, sports fans, partiers, etc. We got there early on a friday and it wasn't too bad. We were seated immediately.

The menu is very white-man-friendly. Lots of pictures with detailed descriptions. Yeah, there is fried chicken, but there is a lot more too (thankfully). I was choosing between a few items that interested me, and settled on the tuna steak. Yeah, the 100% vegetarians will have trouble, cuz like most filipino dishes the 'vegetable' plates have pork in them, etc. hehe.
We also shared a plate of crab fried rice.

Service was attentive and food arrived fairly quickly. I was pleased.

The crab fried rice arrived first (for me) and I sampled that. It was low on crab, and high on garlic. Garlic is apparently very popular in filipino dishes as well. This was not up to par with the stellar crab fried rice at Sala Thai 2, but then again its not marked as a House Special here either. It was just ok.

Thankfully the tuna steak arrived and saved the day. It was grilled to perfection, with a bit of charring to it, and their great Gerry's Marinade smoked in. It wasn't overly greasy, and was still quite flavorful without feeling fatty at all. It was a more expensive item on the menu, but it was worth it. It was juicy ,succulent and just right. I took my time savoring it. With my overload on rice, I actually couldn't finish it and had to bring some home for later.

If you are new to filipino cuisine, or in the mood for an asian restaurant with a sports bar feel, you will be pleased with your experience at Gerry's Grill.

Foodvacuum ate...

Sampled many dishes.

We shot a commercial for Gerry's last year and at the lunch break they served us a plethora of food. Beef, pork and fish dishes. All good. What was cool was the open air grill where you can watch them cook your food.
