I've been to Koi Sushi Boat a few times and each time I have been pleased with the service, and the food. As usual I get the rolls.

This most recent time I ordered a variety - the California Rolls, the Kani Roll, and the Dragon Roll. Here is my rundown.

California Roll - thick and meaty. A good mixture with some mayo inside. Not the best I've had, but tasty enough.

Kani - Real crab was used and they provided a lot of it. Overall, very good. Above average.

Dragon Roll - really good. The combination of Shrimp Tempura and Eel was very tasty in this roll. It is up there with the best Dragon Rolls I've had. The immense size was too much for me and I couldn't finish it. I think his one roll could hold someone over, with maybe a California roll for backup.

My only suggestion for the Koi Sushi Boat menu would be to provide a Shrimp Tempura roll, something a bit smaller than the Dragon and minus the eel for the less adventurous.

Service was quick, and prices were about average but large portions make it a good deal.

As soon as I walked into this restaurant, there was a humungous whiff of I DON'T KNOW WHAT. Even when we went all the way to a booth in the back, the restaurant still smelled like a bathroom.

The service was very good, probably because only 20% of the restaurant was filled on this Sunday night. I was disappointed that the sushi boats at the bar weren't on but I was later informed by the waitress that it's only on Friday and Saturday nights, probably when it's a lot busier. I was slightly confused as to which person was our waitress because two women alternated, which meant that we were asked every question twice (Do you want more tea? Are you ready to order? How's the food?). Ultimately, it served to benefit us because we were constantly attended to.

We ordered a Salmon Skin roll ($5.95), a Hungry roll ($8.95), a Koi Maki roll ($9.95) and an order of Albacore white tuna ($3.25). The best dish would be the Albacore white tuna because the slices of fish were very generous and as usual, the white tuna melted in my mouth. I've heard that white tuna is very prone to discoloration but this remained almost as white as a pearl. Hopefully they didn't add food coloring to it as I've heard many Sushi restaurants do. The Salmon Skin roll included 6 pieces - baked salmon skin and cucumber wrapped in seaweed and rice topped with a sweet teriyaki sauce. The salmon was a bit too dry though.

The Hungry roll contained 8 pieces of spicy tuna wrapped in seaweed and rice and then deep fried. This roll was also pretty plain. Normally, spicy tuna is very well meshed with the spices/sauce and is almost a paste-like consistency. In this particular roll, they were more defined chunks of tuna mixed with the spices/sauce. Because the roll was deep fried, much of the tuna ended up pretty cooked. If there was some way to preserve the rawness of the fish in this roll, it'd be much better.

The Koi Maki roll is basically another version of the Rainbow roll. I've noticed that this restaurant likes to take a roll, replace one fish with another and then rename it. This makes the roll menu look a lot more plentiful and with more variety. So this roll was basically a California roll (crab and avocado wrapped in seaweed and rice) topped with yellowtail, salmon, eel, tuna, halibut and shrimp.

Overall, the food was okay. I would go back for the white tuna since I can't seem to find it at many restaurants, not to mention in good quality. Ambiance definitely affects one's overall experience so as soon as they fix that smell, I'd visit only if I was in the area.

This restaurant is in a plaza with a bunch of other restaurants, mostly Chinese, so if you're there trying out this restaurant, stop by Sheng Kee Bakery at the other end. They have a dessert called a 'Snow Ball' which is basically a huge mochi filled with cake (either white or chocolate), strawberries, and whipped cream. It's a dessert I've only had in Japan and absolutely delicious!
